Week of 11/22

CORRECTIONS to what I said in class today (the day we watched “Better Luck Tomorrow”).

The syllabus says you do NOT owe me a blog post this week so that’s fine. You are not obligated to do one. If you do, however, great. Consider it extra credit, to be applied if your final grade is hovering between two grades (for example, A- and B+). If you do a blog post this week for Airplane! then I do need one next week for Better Luck Tomorrow. If you don’t do a blog post this week, following the syllabus, then do your critical reaction on one or the other NEXT week.

Also, in class I mentioned a final essay…my mistake. You’re done with all your essays. I was thinking of my other students. Apologies.

Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. Reflections on Airplane!:
I enjoyed the film, Airplane!, because the film was funny. The film was directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker. The film was a parody film and it was made in 1980. This film was considered to be postmodernist film. Postmodernism is define as a timeframe, as anything created after the “modernism” phase of film meaning that a specific style uses popular culture in order to create something new. For narrative part of the film, I didn’t really focus on, but the comedic parts made up for the whole film. The film has its sexist parts, but it wasn’t in majority of the film. I like how the fish was the cause of the falling action of the film because anyone who ate the fish became sick. The part when the Doctor was listing the symptoms who ate the fish and at the same time the pilot of the plane was experiencing them was hilarious. The only thing I dislike is that Elaine and Ted were the main characters and they only were together at the beginning and at the end. I recommend anyone to watch this film who to have a good laugh because this film was hilarious.

    • I really enjoyed Airplane. I felt as if it was an Iconic movie. And it was, it set forth a separation from the seriousness that had prevailed in Hollywood for the last several years. Airplane set forth the postmodernist films which now continues to prevail in Hollywood. Airplane was a parody film and I believe it is one of the best parodies I have ever seen. I really enjoyed that serious actors were willing to act in this movie and were even willing to ridicule and poke fun at themselves. Even though I found Airplane to be funny I preferred duck soup I found its comedy more mature than thought of Airplane.

  2. Reflections on Airplane!:

Without a doubt, Airplane! is perhaps one of the most memorable films I have seen that uses other movies as its main source. It is absolutely silly, very humorous, and its randomness makes it so unique that several recent comedies have mirrored its funny ways. There were several components behind the cinematography of this film that really caught my attention. One of those was the storyline. Besides having a bunch of randomness and comical scenes, the film still continues to follow a storyline structure in which we see two people trying to recover that love they had for each other. When people see this movie, the last thing that comes to mind when describing it is a movie with a love story, and yet, it is. That is what makes this movie very special. The filmmakers add so many themes and components, such as distant love, comedy, action, and many others, that really unify the whole film. Another aspect that was interesting was the acting and actors that were in the film. All the actors portrayed their roles very well, and they stayed in character all throughout the film. They all had distinctive roles, which made the movie that more entertaining. I also really enjoyed the setting, the form, and the content of the film. Every factor contributed to the framework of the film, and therefore, allows it to become an instant classic in the field of comedy. I really enjoyed the film and I would definitely recommend it to others.

  3. Airplane: This movie was great, it was a funny movie that almost had to sense to it and that was a good refresher. Most of the time we are used to seeing movies that have a purpose, but this film didn’t it sort of just went with the flow. It sort of felt like they threw everything random in one film and just made it work. Many of the comedy didn’t make sense to me and as you mentioned in class this movie incorporates other films, in the way of making fun of them. This is called pastiche, when artistic work mimics (imitates ) another work. There was a lot of this in the film. I wish the producer didn’t assum we watched all these films they were making fun of, because there was time I actually wanted to get the joke. Other than that it was a great movie it had childish humor that just made it better. Probably the best part was when they say “shits going to hit the fan” and shit literally hit the fan 😂 Probably the best part. The authors were so good they weren’t dumb actor they made the dumb things they did seem super unintentional. Technically this film did have a story line to it, but the fact that that story line wasn’t as irrelevant as watermelons and spears flying that’s what makes us viewers feel like this film didn’t have a story line. Which by the way the story line is landing a plane when everyone who ate fish gets sick. I would act silly re watch this film and would make other watch it as well!

  4. I firmly enjoyed the 1980 satire parody film Airplane because it reflected a renewed era in Hollywood where filmmakers could have fun with the movies they produced. This movie was a brilliant masterpiece because it achieved it’s message effectively through surreal humor and slapstick comedy. Characters Elaine Dickinson and Ted Striker where performed brilliantly by Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty. All of the actors where given adequate amount of screen time and it was awesome seeing many references to movies Zero Hour! and Airport 1975. This movie shows how experimental filmmaking makes progress when the traditional boundaries of film are pushed beyond there limits. I wish more comedies where like the film Airplane today because if they innovated with new material more people would go to the movies and watch them.

Today I learned in chapter 17 that during the 1980s to early 2000s the way we watched movies forever changed with the invention of the blockbuster, videocassete tapes, Blu-ray and DVD’S, camcorder, computers, netflix, and the rise of science fiction directors like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Films become more innovative and technologically advanced but rarely new and devoted entirely to entertainment for the masses.

In chapter 18 I learned how Conglomerates bought out independent studios and motion pictures become the dominant players in movie making cinema. Companies began to see filmaking as a profit making business venture rather than a form of entertainment. Ticket prices began to increase as the cost of producing movies and production budgets soared. Diversity and multiculturalism began being introduced into movies.

  5. so im a bit late on this blog post but here i go. this week (almost two weeks ago) we watched airplanes. this movies level of comedy is absurd. like the part when the water fell from what seemed like nowhere, to when the sh*t hit the fan. those are were like literal terms put in place of idioms. the watermelon on was random, i didnt understand it at all. but when the sh*t hit the fan, it was completely understandable. meaning that an event that is disastrous shows itself in the public eye. there was meme in the movie when the little girl said ” i like my coffee black….. like my men.” that part absolutely made my whole day. i had no clue that that’s where that meme came from. now i know. though i don’t think this movie was as funny as duck soup. though this movie was ACTUALLY IN COLOR i did not reach the level of comedic value that duck soup had obtained. overall this movie was great and it took the edge off of the week that murica found out what future they will have for the next four years.

  6. Reflections on Airplane:
I loved watching this comedy because it does such a great job of using its references to make jokes. I am a fan of parodies, but there are many out that really fail at making me laugh. Although it wasn’t the biggest joke, the line where the passenger says “don’t call me shirly” is still the most memorable to me. This movie was made in 1980 and it showed how much fun a director can have making there movie in this new era of Hollywood. There are many serious movies out there that focus on action or drama. That’s why I feel it’s important we take the time to watch movies like this where we can have a laugh and not take everything to serious.

  7. Reflections on Airplane:

The movie Airplane! was about a former military pilot who boards a plane in an attempt to find his ex lover. He is faced with having to drive the plane when many of the passengers and pilots fall victim to food poisoning caused by the fish that was served on the airplane. There was an array of different personalities and people that were upon the flight, and I think each one helped to contribute towards the comedy of the movie.
I think Airplane may have been my favorite movie that we watched!! It was funny and kept me entertained throughout the entire film. It was a big change considering the other films we have watched throughout the semester. There were some familiar characters in this movie for me. This film seemed to be a spoof on previous films of the following era. There were several puns used in this film that had visual stimulation to go along with them. It was clearly apparent that the producers an cast of this film had fun while making this film; how could they not!? There were several one liners in this film. One scene that stuck out to me the most was when the sh*t literally hit the fan. The little scenes such as this are what made the film hilarious. Though I don’t think Airplane! is the funniest movie of all time, I do see why it was ranked so highly in the era. I think this film was probably one of the funniest films during its time of release and was a change for the seriousness of the 1970s era.

  8. The film Airplane was an amazingly funny movie. The comidic timing and meta qualities too it made it hilarious even today when some fo the joke fell flat given they were current in nature. Th thing i find even more genius is that this essitially a word for word remake of the film Zero Hour (1957) i seen a little bit of the film and it was way too serious and extremely melodramatic and i am so happy it spawned AIrplane, Naked gun, and the countless movies that have come out since i.e. Scary movie etc.. The use of serious B list actors to continue their acting style in a more satirical fashion is what really made the film stick; Leslie Nielsen absolutely stole the show with what little time he was in it, I think halfway through the second act to start of the third is when he was introduced.

  9. Airplane!, for it’s time, was a wonderful movie. It’s irreverent comedy coming out of the mouths of serious actors from the last decade was a smashing success. Not only, as previously mentioned, does Airplane! borrow — and heavily — from it’s also-Paramount-produced, and often much more serious older sister Airport (1970). Despite it’s blatant ripoff of both these older films, there is most certainly a reason Airplane! is the film that is remembered. Bringing idioms and metaphors to life, causing irreverent havoc ad-hoc in the background, and homorous dialogue coming from the mouths of melodrama greats from the last 30 years made this a treat even to watch today. Watching this film for the first (or second) time after seeing such shock and irreverent humor fests as Family Guy and parody B movies from an uncountable list reminds us of the power of a good visual joke, and what it can do to an entire industry.

  10. I thoroughly enjoyed Airplane! Its parody of classic Hollywood films was phenomenal through their employment of actors that had experience playing melodramatic characters seriously. It’s because the actors played their roles so traditionally in this surrealist comedy that I think really makes the film so successful in its comedy. Though sometimes the film has some jokes that I found a little too bizarre, I really found myself a fan of its abstract approach to comedy.

  11. Reflections on Airplane!:
This will have been my second time watching the movie, the first time I was much, much younger and barely understood why my family members thought it was funny. Now being older and having seen more films, shows I understand its appeal more, it was not so much the juvenile sexism that had my attention but the satire of other popular shows, movies and current events in the time the movie was being created. For instance when Ted has his flashback of first meeting Elaine, it starts off in a dark dirty bar until he sets his eyes on Elaine then suddenly transforms into the set of Saturday Night Fever (1977) where Ted turns into a less appealing John Travolta making fun of his hip disco moves. Of course John Travolta being a hot commodity at the time was made into satire twice on the film, the second time being when Elaine has her flashback at the beach. Ted and Elaine strolling on the beach with light happy music playing, running into and out of the waves of the ocean, the opening scene of Grease (1978). Maybe it was because John Travolta did back to back films involving his character pelvic thrusting and pointing as his dance moves and lusting after a wanted women, either way the film was great in all its satire glory.
