    Reflections on Persepolis:

There are very few movies that have the ability to seem entertaining and simple, yet transmit within their content a serious theme that causes a profound impression on the audience. One of these movies is the film Persepolis. Without a doubt, filmmakers Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud did an excellent job in presenting such a deep topic in an approachable way. Persepolis is definitely a one-of-a-kind movie for many reasons. The simple fact that the filmmakers chose to make the movie using hand-drawn animation allows the film to be unique and distinctive. This particular aspect of style and form helps the movie portray this sense of empathy. The audience is compelled to understand the feelings of the protagonists and understand exactly how they feel. Another aspect that stood out was the simplicity and complete honesty of the film. The filmmakers choose to express certain topics within the film that are of great significance in a very natural and straightforward way. Another strategical feature of the film was the dialogue between the main characters. The conversations they have among each other are very personal and direct, and allow the audience to fully understand what the character is feeling. Overall, Persepolis is an exceptional film and I would definitely recommend it to others.

Viva Cuba is a film which I believe does promote the Castro regime. The film seems to portray Cuba favorably it constantly shows pictures of Castro and Che. The movie is also landscape heavy showing off the natural beauty of Cuba. I really enjoyed the scenes in which the editor choose a landscape and filmed it and edited while having the two kids scream at each other or shake hands. I editing in the movie was not the greatest however it was still an entertaining film. I do hate how the movie ended, the sea took both of the kids. They decided to basically suicide rather than be under the control or mercy of their parents. I believe the final scene could have been symbolic as well. It could have been a call to action against the Castro regime.

    Reflections on Persepolis:
At first, I thought the film, Persepolis, was going to be boring to me but after watching I really enjoyed the film. The film was a hand-drawn animation and biography that was based on an autographical graphic novel also called Persepolis. The film and graphic novel were by Marjane Satrapi. The fact that the film was animated, it felt innocent, but it showed awareness of what’s happening in Tehran, Iran. The present was represented in color while the past and flashbacks were told in black and white. The film was in mostly black and white so the characters wouldn’t look like foreigners in a foreign country. I like the character development of Marjane because we saw a life young child turn into an adult. We saw the experience of a young Marjane and an adult Marjane. I like how the film was hand drawn instead of being digitally animated because the people in the story would look weird to a point where they would look creepy. The character devlopment of Marjane was the main part of the film while her family and political issues played a big role in Marjane’s life. I recommend anyone to watch this film because it was a hand drawn animation and the story of the film was interesting.

    Reflection On Persepolis
When the movie began I bough to my self this is going to be boring it looked like a film just for children. But my aspect completely changed after the first 5min. This movie was so much more than what I though. It contained such a strong message and the story of it was what helped this movie. The theme of this movie was self identification. Marjane a little girl living in a pre-evolutionary world. Her and the family lived in Iran where there was wars happenin people getting incarcerated killed and taken away. People that were her family and this is what had a big impact on her life.m that her own family was going through these horrible events. In class we talked about how of hand drawn, life action or digital was better and what made it better. In this case I believe hand drawn really helped the movie and it would have been complete different if it was life action for example. The reason hand drawn was better was for the fact that many scenes like her growing up made it more dramatic it pooping at us. Like her foot getting huge and her boods growing and her hand getting bigger it allowed us to speed up in time within a couples shots. Where as if we have had live action we would need a whole new character to show the change in time from Marj being a little girl to turning into a grown adult. The way that the story was told gave us an insight of how the life of her family and what there surrounded Were like

    Reflections on Persepolis:
Part of why this film was so succesful was becuase of the animation. it would not have worked as effectivly if it were live action or animated differently. For one the animation w]allowed for a more exxagereated emotions as its easier to draw exaggered emotions on a cartoon while maintaing a certain level of belief. During live action films if an actor is too animated or over the top, especially in a story such a Persepolis, it would see as unbelivbeable and very likely recoeved as annoying. But in this animated biopic, it’s important to exaggerate, the emotions of a child and young adult becuase everythign seems so big and imporatant to child even if in reality its not. The animantion alos makes our protagonist, Marjane more naive and easier to relate to in a world where bombings, oppresion, and execution are the norm. The blakc and white color scheme is also important to when Marjane is recounting her past, as events from her youth are documented in balck and white while the few events from the present are documented in color. This works particulalry well to show how behind the times Iran was with it’s laws and views towards women and people with differing ideologies.

  5. Reflections on Viva Cuba:
What I found very interesting in Viva Cuba were the effects…or lack of them. There didn’t seem to be any color grading on the screen giving it the B list look and when I realized this it wasn’t actually bothering that much. It actually just made it feel more ground in reality or mundane looking in the image. The special effects gave off even more of that B list look, but I also found them not bothersome because it is a kids movie. What I did find bothering was the ending which was them standing at the edge of a cliff and consumed by CGI water. It left me completely confused whether they both just committed suicide or they got hit by a bunch of water and will be fine. I can only assume it’s one of those left up for interpretation endings so I’ll assume they both died.

My first impression of this was that it was going to be a boring film, but rather it was quite the opposite. Persepolis tackled some tough issues, such as how one identifies as- or how they do not. Marjane dealt with that very problem, she was forced to either become someone she’s not or to stay true to herself. The film was a hand drawn animation based off of Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel. By Satrapi, and Paronnaud’s decision to have the film be an animated film rather than a live action film helped made some of the more difficult scenes easier to digest as a viewer. I am very impressed with this film with the hand drawn animation, as well as the way they tackled some of the harder topics. I would definitely watch this again.

    Reflections on Viva Cuba:
What I like about this movie was that the director really try to make it from the perspective of children from the dancing stars and the guijes. This makes the movie more heartfelt because it enforces that this KIDS are going on this dangerous journey to stay together. I don’t think that this film tried to make an anti- Cuba or pro-Cuba movie, the film really tried to show Cuba in a neutral light and show how the average child feels about the the country they live in. The filmed showed how beautiful the island is but also showed how much the government is part of peoples lives. The Latin music made the adventure very upbeat to show the innocent and happy of the children, this emphases that we are looking at this movie through the perceptive of the children.

    Reflections on Persepolis:
The film Persepolis directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud began to remind me of the movie Spirited Away directed by Hayao Miyazaki. A well connected family made up of a mother, father and one single daughter that grows together, although in Spirited Away when Chihiro gets separated from her family and ends up in this strange abnormal world, in Persepolis Marjane stepping into the strange abnormal world was actually her entering a life filled with war. It is an interesting film for many reasons, one of them being how accurate it is for a child to grow up surrounded by war and how their family and friends influence their behavior to the reaction of war. Throughout the beginning of the film Marjane turned to her grandmother and the lord for answers and comfort, though right after Marjane’s receives news of her uncles arrest she runs to her room and the lord appears as this glorious guy with a long white beard floating on top of a cloud to try to calm her down and give her some answers but she refuses to hear anything he has to say. I believe that was the turning point in her youth and the film displayed it just right, it was not the war that had transformed her innocent thoughts it had to be something that personally affected her since the beginning of her time which was her belief in a higher power to protect her. Overall great film and great child point of view as well as an adults point of view, kids movies are extremely impressive since they have to appeal to all ages: the kids who are watching and the adults who are taking them, to everyone in between.

Reflections on Persepolis: So, I’ve actually heard about this film and I found it interesting, mostly because it combined a bit of history and animation. What I liked the most about the movie was the fact the animation was simple. Not a lot of shading and the designs were simple. The story of the film was quite interesting and I really got it in to it. I know most people assume that animated films are for children and most tend to be… underwhelming but the saying of “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” could be applied to this movie and really breaks the stereotype of animated movies. I’m also glad that this film was done in hand drawn animation instead of CGI or if it was a live action film. I feel like if it was done in CGI would reflect the original creators style and probably lose that personal touch And if it was live action, I feel the focus would have been more on the revolution then the main character going through life.

    Reflections on Persepolis
I didn’t think much about Persepolis going in. It was both animated and was about a serious time in Iran history, the Islamic revolution. I always thought mixing animation and serious subjects could either be a hit or miss. In this case it turned out great. The black in white coloring along with the animation really made the movie leave an impression. The movie is being told through the life of a child, Marjane Satrapi and her perspective. Using her own view a memories of growing up during the Islamic revolution made the viewer, especially those who might of never heard of the Islamic revolution before, feel like they were living through it as well. There isn’t really anything that I would change about the movie. It does a great job with what it sets out to do and had me interested from start to finish.

    Reflections on Persepolis:

I was absolutely intrigued by Persepolis. Its status as an Iranian animated film captivated me, especially because its tone was not one someone would expect to come from an animated film. The film explored really dark themes about revolt, suffering governments, isolation, depression, and death. I deeply admired the main character’s story and that the author was able to get her autobiography adapted into film from the original graphic novel she published.
I am in love with animation as a medium, and I usually love how feelings and concepts are translated into visuals that usually can’t be done through live action, and seem less synthetic than if CGI were used.

Persepolis: This animated film was such an interesting film. The plot consisted of very heavy concepts, especially when being told through the eye of a child. Although the child does grow up, their seemed to always remain a childlike quality about her. I really appreciated the filmmakers decision to show God as an actual being that she talked to. I think it really showed the significance of her struggling faith in her life. The scene where she attempted suicide was done so well for an animated film. Her seeing God and him telling her it isn’t her time, was powerful and yet didn’t let the attempted suicide scene become too emotional. I think it created balance in the film. The film seemed to have many things that created balance. I think that is one of the benefits of having a serious film in animation. The film can show many heavy topics and yet still seem innocent in a way that a non-animated film could not.

This was an animated film presented through the perspective of an Iranian child who grows up. This film had many dark scenes about love and revolt. Usually animation is used in childlike films but I feel like this movie mixed animation and serious real world topics such as government and depression very well. Marjane’s story is about trying to fit in because her parents had wanted her to get away from the war. The black and white color schemes really make you feel like she’s telling this story from her memory. Overall, this movie used its animation to its advantage to tell a story that looks unrealistic, but can be relatable to real life.

  14. Reflections on Persepolis:

I really enjoyed this film. Persepolis was a hand drawn movie that was about about an Iranian girl that matured throughout the movie. The movie took place right after the Iranian revolution. The movie was full of political and social conflicts. There is a lot of repression going on where Marji is growing up and she was constantly being reprimanded by the people who held the power in her community. I feel that this movie delivered its points very well and did a great job of making its viewers aware of the social injustice that took place after this revolution. Due to the intolerant neighborhood and the violence her parents made her leave and she struggled further with trying to fit in. I was impressed that a hand drawn film could hold so much power and show so many controversial and real aspects of life. I really enjoyed this film.

Viva Cuba was a very interesting film. Who doesn’t like a movie that talks about two kids running away on an adventure. I think out of all the films that were shown to us during the semester this was one of my favorites. The part that most caught my attention was the end that scene was just so powerful but then again it like left us thinking. What happened next? Overall this movie was great and would recommend to watch.
