  1. “Waltz with Bashir” is an interesting animated documentary film about having lost memories of the massacres that have happened in Lebanon. The scenes that are mostly freaky are those wild barking dogs. They may seem like guard or police dogs but they seem to be a lot more violent than that by scaring the hell out of those people. This movie may or may not have to do with the violence committed against the Palestinians by knowing one scene of a Palestinian woman crying out loud, that proves Palestinians are nothing to us. Therefore, Folman has never spoke to any Palestinian person and most of them we’ve seen are in flashbacks and footage towards the end. Overall, this seems to be an interesting and violent animated documentary film of all.

  2. Waltz with Bashir is animated like no other film. its use of dark colors and low lighting is in direct contrast with the movie of wall-e which is bright and colorful.the shots used in the films are mostly closeups to mid range shots. the sound desgin uses atmospheric sounds the sounds of guns firing to be authentic

  3. This film was astounding. It was interesting to see animation touch on such dark subjects. I appreciated how the film took place after the war, because it shows how the horrors of war still live ravage the minds of the survivors. The symmetry between the world of dreams and memories of the tragedy was great touch. This movie, despite being animated depicted the gruesome elements of the battlefield fairly well. The irony of the music to me symbolized how war is glorified as being something exciting, but the reality is utter hell.

  4. I really liked this movie. First i really think the cartoon style was original considering it was a lot like a movie in the gestures of the characters and their expressions reminded me a lot of a movie and not of a cartoon. It isn’t often that we see an animated treating such serious subjects as the war in Liban, This movie was taking place after the war and is a recollection of memories from the principal characters. I enjoyed seeing the post traumatic effects the war had on the different characters and see how they individually deal with them. The movie treated as well the topic of the memory and how reliable it is. It show us how our brain manage to fill in the gaps with sometimes false information or unexciting one. The movie is explicitly making fun of the epic movie style as it puts in contrast the war atrocity and trauma to the stimulation resulting from such actions and potential pride or honor or scene of purpose resulting from it. So thru the eyes of with young innocent soldiers we assist to their delusions and experience of war trauma. A very interesting movie in my opinion that brings in a fresh perspective in the analysis of war atrocities and crimes.

  5. This movie made a deep impression on me. I will never underestimate the potential and versability of animation, not that I did before. The ability of the animation to reenact both what happen and the internalized imagery was awesome. I have seen many war movie that show American troops do crazy immature things while on the frontline, it was eye opening to see that it’s not just Americans troops that act badly. Visually by using animation the filmmakers were able to give us some truly gruesome scenes that would have turned our stomachs if they were not animated.

  6. “Waltz and Bashir” offers a unique take on a gruesome event in Isarails history. Depicted using animation to portray the events through reenactments and interviews it offers the audience a glimpse into the psychological and emotional impact of war. As an animated film, it shows how animation can be utilized to express complex thoughts and ideas. Being animated it relies upon audiences preconceived notions of cartoons (funny, childlike, etc) that offers a nonaggressive medium to render dramatic ideas. This allows the events to be more reliably accepted by the audience as nonthreatening, thus, more impactful than a documentary or film using actors (in the traditional sense). Specific uses of mise-en-scene, sound, and lighting contribute to the verisimilitude of the film and show that animated films can contain the same complex cinematic language and form as non-animated movies. One example is the scene in the orchard depicting a slow motion movement of troops. Shadows cast by the trees (lighting) and the mise-en-scene portray a danger and create suspense. The music is calming but offers a sense that something traumatic is about to happen. Similar music is heard in the Godfather (during the montage like killings of his enemies) and war movies. The serenity is broken when a child attacks the solders, ending the moment of peace, the metaphorical calm before the storm. Cinematic tools allow the director to portray this moment in complexity not expected in animated films.

“Wall-E” follows a narrative seen in Disney and traditional animated films. These expectations include non-violence (or if there is very child friendly) and a happy conclusion. The dance scene in space between Wall-E and Eve show that ability of animated films to inspire. In a similar way, “Waltz and Bashir” inspire the audience and both films epitomize the advancement in animation and legitimize its use as a medium for expressing complex thoughts and ideas. Rather than associated with children and often below other films (not worth study or for entertainment purposes only) they are a medium whose ideas can be as complex or more than traditional films.

  7. Through animation Waltz with Bashir was able to effectively communicate the perils of war. The design choice of animation was brilliant as it allowed us to empathize more directly as the director would have more control and doing interviews in animation instead of filmed was also a good choice as it didn’t bring us out of the animated narrative. The sound was a bit ironic as most of it was happy while dreadful actions were happening on screen. In cinematography there were many moving shots and many close up shots. I noticed close up shots when combined with animations were still able to convey human emotions just as well as any other film we have watched.
