  1. Whoa, timing. I just finished writing this.

While I personally didn’t find it flawless, Fruitvale Station was still an enjoyable, well put together film.

Right out the gate I noticed a decision I quite liked. During the second scene (right after the real footage from the titular station), we see Oscar and Sophina talking on the bed about 24 hours before the foreshadowed incident. But what caught my attention was a sound from outside: police sirens. These are from from an unusual occurrence in any city, yet when you sit back and think about it, you almost never hear them in media quite like this. While not only did that help sell the ground nature of their world, it also ties back into the themes of the film, and helps to characterize the area before we’ve even see outside of the room in the first scene.

Another decision I liked involving the sound direction came during the end of the film: while Oscar’s family and friends are praying for his survival, the sound cuts out. Silence: one sound so easy to associate with death, as the next sounds come from the scene in which it’s revealed Oscar has passed away.

Speaking of those later scenes, when the Oscar’s friends and family were getting briefed on Oscar’s condition, and later his death, rather than bob between family and the doctor, distracting the audience with a character of minor importance, the camera solely focused on the characters that actually mattered to events unfolding, letting us focus on their acting as Sophia and Wanda heard the news.

Lastly, while I shared some things that didn’t set well with me in the film during class (as I was constantly wondering if the real Oscar was as good a person or not, among other things), one I was able to come to a conclusion upon with help of Chapter 4 in the textbook was Scope. While the film was meant to chronicle Oscar’s last day alive, from the first minute of New Year’s Eve to his death on the morning of New Year’s Day, even had he simply gone home after the celebrations, it still would have likely been the most important day in his life. He celebrates with his mother, he reconciles with his girlfriend, he quits drug dealing, he meets a woman in the store and again later on the BART, the scene with the dog getting hit, the run on the BART itself. For such a grounded movie, I felt that the scope was a bit small: had they been spread out across a week, it might have been more plausible.

And to elaborate on some things I said in class, I felt personally that even if Oscar had been portrayed as a worse person than he was in the film, it wouldn’t have made the officers more justified in their actions towards Oscar. If the same scene played out the same, replacing Oscar with someone possessing far less humanity, the idea of a police officer playing Judge, Jury, and Executioner does not sit well with me even then. The only situation I can accept an officer killing another is when their life is genuinely on the line and they have no other choice, such as a firefight. But between all the incidents getting publicity these last few years, I feel as though police officers aren’t asking themselves ‘is there a better way’ often enough? To speak of the Fruitvale Station incident, the officer mistaking his gun for a taser is especially problematic. Even if he was new and panicked, are those two pieces of gear kept in similar, easily mistaken locations? Would a taser even have been a good choice? The officers were covering Oscar: would he not have tased the whole group? That only scratches the surface of the problems surrounding the police force that lead to the hundreds of deaths of people they were supposed to, as put in the film, ‘Protect and Serve’.

  2. First, the editing in Fruitvale Station. The scene involving Oscar’s family and friends waiting for him in the hospital has close up shots of Wanda, Sophina, Chantay and his friends. These close up shots of his family in the room shows the pain that they are in. Also, a long shot captures Oscar’s family praying. The close up shots and the long shots shows the theme of love. All of those people in the waiting room love Oscar and those shots shows how that the reason that they are in distressed is because of their love for Oscar. Oscar has people in his life that love him and I could see that from these shots.
Next, the sound in Fruitvale Station. There is no sound in the scene when Oscar is giving Tatiana a piggyback ride. I don’t hear Oscar’s or Tatiana’s voice and there’s no background noise. This scene captures the theme of family. I see how Oscar is connected to Tatiana and they do appear to be close. This scene forces the audience to just watch and not listen to the movie. The sound is not important, what’s important in this scene is showing the audience how Oscar and Tatiana are bonding. Oscar values his family.
Lastly, Michael B. Jordan does a good job showing the different sides of Oscar Grant. I see a balance of Oscar as a good and bad person. From seeing the different sides of Oscar I see him as a regular guy. Michael B. Jordan performs Oscar as a regular guy to show the audience that Oscar is a person. By portraying Oscar as an everyday guy, Jordan conveys the message that Oscar Grant is a human being. Overall, Michael B. Jordan humanizes Oscar in this movie.

  3. Brian Lapira

I really liked this movie because of the fact that it’s based on a true story. One of the techniques that I liked is the camerawork. I like the way Ryan Coogler uses the camera to focus on not just the main character, but also the other characters as well. Also, I liked the scene where the camera was focusing on the mom walking away while Oscar was being restrained by the police. In addition, it gave me a glimpse of what was happening during the dramatic scenes.

The other technique that I liked it the acting. Michael B. Jordan played the role of Oscar very well. He knew he had to put a lot of effort and hard work in order to portray Grant. Furthermore, he had to put in a lot of emotions into his acting as well since the film is a tragedy.

Lastly, what I liked is the editing. I like the way Coogler edits the movie by putting text messages on the screen during the scenes where Oscar was texting his friends. This was the first movie I know to actually show the text messages on film unlike most movies where they show them off screen. Most importantly, it helped me understand what was going on in that character’s mind.

  4. Fruitvale Station was definitely a heart-wrenching film, especially considering that the events in the movie actually happened. I really enjoyed the acting in the movie, especially on Michael B. Jordan’s part. He does a great job of portraying someone from the Bay Area that has obviously had a rough past life and is trying to reconcile his previous failures. For instance when it shows him in prison being held back by many officers and yelling at his mother, he is almost like a totally different person than when he is helping his daughter get ready for school, or having a heartfelt one on one conversation with his girlfriend. It shows a deep change in character that I thought was really interesting and all around believable.

I also really enjoyed the editing in the movie, especially the scene where he gets shot and the camera is focused on his face and then it cuts to the camera laying on the ground next to him. It makes the whole scene have more depth in my opinion by putting the viewer in that same position he’s in and by bringing the camera down to his level. There is also an instance where they get on the train and it then cuts to the BART train taking off into the tunnel and we see the entire length of the train leaving. This specific cut made me feel like there was something sinister being foreshadowed.

Lastly the sound in the movie was phenomenal. No loud explosions or crazy music or anything of the like. Just sounds grounded in everyday life. Sirens whir by, rap music plays in Oscar(Michael B. Jordan)’s car, and the sounds of the city’s daily functions really echo throughout the movie. I really enjoyed the scene where they are all on the train and one of the friends starts playing music on his phone. Shortly after that a character who is made to seem somewhat ominous approaches and there is an encroaching sound. That same character then proceeds to pull speakers out of his backpack and hand them to the one playing music and the sound dissipates and is instead replaced with a classic Bay Area rap song. This scene really threw me off and made me think ominous thoughts regarding what was about to happen. Then the air is filled with positive vibes and I got a sense of relief in that brief instance.

  5. Ryan Coogler did a fantastic job with using different lightings to set tones of certain scenes to have the audience feel the connection within the scenes whether it was during uplifting moods, or in scenes when he was bettering himself, or during the intimacy of Oscar and his family and friends.
I really liked how Ryan Coogler used the real footage for the start of the film and the shots of the Bart train zooming by cause it give us some type of anticipation and a build up throughout the film to the actual scene on Bart and at the station.
Ryan Coogler also used a wide screen shot of a beautiful scenery, usually where people create deep thoughts, after Oscar Grant has a flashback of a bad visit from his mother. I appreciated the flashback because not only did it show the audience Oscar’s realization of becoming a better man, but it gave us information of who Oscar met/knew in jail, which was the guy who started the mess on Bart instead of having the audience clueless as to who that guy was during the rumble on Bart. I loved this movie and I would recommend this movie to everybody.

  6. WHERE TO BEGIN?!? I’ll start with the visually obvious; The Scenery and locations in the movie accurately captured what it’s like to drive around many suburban bay area communities and neighborhoods, to a point where I believe I began to even see familiar streets and places . Driving around and seeing friends and acquaintances on the streets also greatly represented how close everyone is in some of these small communities where they all at one point or another went to elementary, jr high, high school, and in some cases jail with each other.

The sound / music was true to the bay area, and hearing local artists’ music really brought me as a viewer out of my class seat and into the passenger seat of Oscar’s car. I would also like to point out how well the sound was in many of the outdoor / outside scenes because most people don’t know this but it is a nightmare trying to get quality sound outside which I learned last semester from helping a friend with a college film for the film festival – we had to redo ALL of EVERYONE’S lines because the scenes where shot in an open field with lots of wind. (Had the privilege of playing Brad Pitt’s character ‘Mills’ in the ending scene to the movie Se7en). The eerie ambiance at the train station, the constant mumbled chatter of everyone around, and the very, very faint ‘thump-thump’ of Oscar’s heart beating as the police are searching for him on the Bart all created the tension needed to understand the dangerous environment the scene had suddenly shifted to.

Lighting, characters, and acting were all outstanding, and I mean this to the point of having wiped literal tears from my eyes in class (twice) because of how beautifully and artistically portrayed the close bond and relationship of a father and daughter can be. The lighting in some of the silent, happy, playful memories he had with his daughter created a background glow effect with the sun and the sky in the background, beams of light caressing their faces if only for a moment of innocence in time, made it feel like we were in a dream.

The theme I’m taking away from this is Family, there are many other important themes and messages that could be read out of this movie of course, and many of them controversial due to the nature of what happened and the way our government and world work today. But I kind of needed this bit of a wake up call – which is what movies can sometimes be for some of us – no lie I actually went home later that day, grabbed my camera, and started making videos with my daughter again which is something we love to do together but have been so busy with life, swim team, student senate, Judo Club, school, and fight training lately that I let what was most important slide by unnoticed; Family. I love my little girl so much and this movie only made me want to be a better father, brother, son, and friend. So sad and terrible that this tragedy happened.

  7. Overall, Fruitvale Station was a well done film. The editing and directing style of this movie gave it a very realistic and involved feeling for the audience. I have to give the director a good amount of credit for this movie because taking on film with incidents that really took place in the past, are probably some of the hardest stories to present. I don’t really have a good understanding of what actually happened and who Oscar Grant was as a person but if everything is fairly accurate to the film, then this was definitely a solid piece of cinema.

First off I really enjoyed the directing in this movie. I think choosing to go with mainly all third-person shots gave this film almost a documentary feel which increased the realistic aspect. My favorite scene in this film is an elastic shot when Oscar, his girlfriend and their friends get onto Bart, and as Bart takes off the camera stays focused on the same spot, showing the rapid moving images of all the people on there and then as soon as it gets to the end of the cart the camera view moves to show the carts slowly disappear into the tunnel. This is implicitly sending the audience a message that something is going to happen very soon, and a great turning point is about to take place.

Second, One thing I am trying to analyse more and more in movies lately, is the sound. Fruitvale Station doesn’t have a ton of music in it but the music it did have was classic Bay Area Rap (like Mac Dre) and for the viewers who are from the Bay Area, one can relate emotionally even more so to this film. Another one of my favorite scenes was when Oscar and his friends started playing Mac Dre on the Bart, then a random guy comes up with speakers and then once the music is played louder on the speakers, everyone in the cart starts dancing. This scene is great because it reminds me of partying with my friends and it shows Bay Area music and dance randomly bringing people together in an unexpected situation.

Third, I thought that the acting was well done in this film. The little girl who plays Oscars daughter does a great job with her role and she actually looks fairly similar to Oscars real daughter at the time. This was the first movie I have seen with this actor who plays Oscars character and I was impressed with his performance. The emotion he displayed when seeing the dog get hit was very good. The Fatherly love and relationship that he shared with his daughter was touching and seemed very genuine. Great acting overall in my opinion.

  8. Fruitvale Station was easily one of the best movies I had seen in a while. While I know the entire movie was not 100% true to the real occurrence, I found that Ryan Coogler did a really good job foreshadowing the death of Oscar Grant. When the dog had showed up at the gas station, I already had an idea of what was going to happen. The fact that they used a dog that could be identified as a pit bull, shows a lot about the message of the film. Pit bulls are often seen as “bad dogs”. This one was hit by a car and left with no one to help him. Oscar, as a young African American male, is viewed the same way by society. When you see pit bulls in the media, they have negative connotations. The same could go for a person of color. The dog’s death foreshadowing Oscar’s was an important piece of the film, while others feel it should have been left out, I do not. Another aspect of this film is the music used. Anyone who has grown up in the bay area knows how strongly music impacts us. The scene where Oscar and his friends were stuck on BART and they decided to celebrate on the train is a good example. Everyone got up and started dancing when Mac Dre started playing. The use of actual footage from the shooting is a good way to make the viewers realize this was an actual thing that happened. Movies often draw a fine line between reality and fiction, but the idea of this film was to tell the story of Oscar Grant in a different light. The insertion of the documentary footage at the beginning and end of the film gives validation to the story, the most powerful clip being Oscar’s daughter,Tatiana, grieving.

    Blog Post – Fruitvale Station

First of all, I have never watched Fruitvale Station movie. Also, I have never heard about what Fruitvale Station is and what happened at Fruitvale Station till now. I felt that the movie was great. Also, I learned something new that I didn’t know about before.

The movie was great with all its scenes. In the scene, where a dog was hit by a car suddenly and unexpectedly. It was a good way, a foreshowing of Oscar’s death. When I was watching the movie, Oscar and the dog’s scene did not seem important at all. But, when Oscar’s death was sudden and unexpected too, that’s when I felt that the dog’s death foreshadowed Oscar’s death. At that point, the dog scene seemed very important in the movie even though the dog scene didn’t exist in Oscar’s real life.

I really liked the acting in the movie, Fruitvale Station. For example, in the scene, where Oscar is in the hospital, Oscar’s mother and others were in the waiting room. The way Oscar’s mother was having hope that Oscar will be fine even though she was helpless at the same time was portrayed by her really well. She portrayed the scene really good even though it was a sad moment. Also, in the scene where Oscar’s mother meets Oscar in the jail. The way she was talking to Oscar, her voice was clam yet angry which was shown very clearly to the viewers. Though, Oscar’s mother’s scenes were short, but her scenes were very detailed, meaningful, and had clarity and that’s what I really liked.

Though, all scenes in the movie were great, but I would have done some editing. For example, in the scene, where Oscar is in the hospital bed living his last moments of his life. The flashback of him walking around with his daughter on his back. I thought that scene wasn’t necessary. For me, that flashback was very quick and a sudden change. Before, I could even think about what was the point of the flashback, it went back to the hospital scene. For me, if that flashback didn’t exist then it would have been more of a smoother scene. Also, it would have been better than if the scene was with the flashback.

  10. This is the third time I have seen the movie Fruitvale Station and the movie amazes me even more each time I see it seeing the final hours of Oscar Grant’s as he was killed by BART Police on New Year’s Day of 2009.

The acting in the movie was great. Octavia Spencer’s role as Oscar Grant’s mother was a powerful role. She may have had a smaller role than Michael B. Jordan as Oscar Grant, but was still had an impact on her performance. For Example Oscar’s mom in the scene in the prison when she was visiting Oscar a year earlier in the flashback scene. She had a calm tone of voice however she showed her anger towards Oscar especially calling him out on not being around his daughter.

The scenes were well done. The two scenes that caught my attention was the scene where the pit bull was hit by a car and then died. It was a foreshadowing of what was to happen to Oscar about 12 hours later. However I also found it to be a stereotypical scene, as Oscar was an African American male and they have been all over the news in the last few years with police brutality and shootings. Also with the pit bull breed as they have had a bad rap for being known as :vicious dogs”. Mostly being involved in the dog fights all over the world. Another scene was the flashback in prison which took place a year earlier. The incident where he was going back and forth with the Caucasian inmate was also a foreshadowing, as the two bumped into each other on the BART which resulted in an incident that escalated real quickly. Causing the BART police to stop the train and pulling Oscar and his friends off the train and eventually Oscar being fatally shot.

Music selection was really great on Cooglar’s part. He made it with a Bay Area vibe, something that you would move back and forth to even during the film. It was really good that he used Bay Area Rapper Mac Dre being played through out the movie. I also liked that the music didn’t need to be played really loud in the car where everyone three blocks away could hear it.

  11. During this movie they master two main things that make this movie great. One of the few things they do during this movie is camera positioning. They were two scenes in this movie that only connect by two things. The scene with the dead dog and the scene with Oscar died on the train platform. They are connecting with the camera being parallel to the ground. In these shots they make the dog and Oscar the focus of the scene. The other thing important to the film was the bloodstain on the pavement. I notice that both blood stains were practically identical. Blood stains are hard to copy, so i was extremely happy to find that they put some effort into that prop.
the other thing they mastered in this movie is the story line. The screenwriters were able to show both sides of Oscar Grant. we were able to see him as violent and we were able to see him as nice, helping, caring man. The film shows that every time he does something right it backfires on him. We were able to see what troubles Oscar from the start of the movie to the end.

  12. I thought The Frutivale Station was very realistic movie for being based on a true incident I really love the cinematography and music of this movie. In the scene where Oscar was driving down the street listening to Mac Dre. The way they the camera faced the Oscar I felt like I was in the passenger seat with him and choosing Mac Dre as the music really gave It the real Bay Area feel . I also think that the acting in this movie was really great. Octavia Spencer played a great concerned mother, even though she didn’t have a huge part in the movie when she was on camera those scenes were very significant to the movie. The only thing I didn’t like were Oscars use of the word “bruh” he said it literally every other word and it was actually kind of distracting me from what he said at some parts of the movie when he was trying to say something important. Lastly, Kevin Durand who played the lead officer his performance was over bearing. As soon as you saw Kevin on camera your immediate is that he is going to be the one to shoot Oscar because of the roles he usually plays are the antagonist.

  13. I absolutely enjoyed watching Frutivale Station! The beginning of the scene caught my attention because of the footage being real. I wasn’t a fan of the flashback scene, when Oscar was In prison because I found myself having to question if it was a flashback thus me being a little confused. The music choice was enjoyable. For example when Oscar was driving in the car and rap music was playing, I felt like I was in Oscar’s world. The characters were relatable and captured my attention when certain scenes occurred. For example, when Oscar called his grandma in the supermarket, It made me have a flashback to how my grandmother would react if I called her spontaneously. The camera angles were amazing. I was able to follow Oscar around as if I was there that day. For example, when Oscar was at his moms house for her birthday, I was able to feel as if I was the one walking into the house and greeting the family.

  14. This was my first time watching Fruitvale Station, I’ve heard about the actual story and it was honestly sad to hear. Even though in the movie some of the scenes were made up, but it still made those scenes feel realistic.

The scene that made me feel really heartbroken was when it showed Oscars mother Wanda played by Octavia Spencer and friends praying for Oscar while they waited to hear how he was doing from getting shot at the Bart station by an officer. That scene made it feel real as if you were there and also it showed how much they cared and were worried about him.
The moment that the doctors told Oscars family and friends that he didn’t make it and showing a flashback that wasn’t in one of the scenes where Oscar has his daughter on his back. To me it showed all the happiness and that his daughter was his whole world and now she’s left without him in her life.

What i didn’t like was that on some of the scenes the camera was a bit shaky. I felt that the camera should of been still, vice a followed camera almost seeming like a realistic documentary.
Michael B. Jordan playing as Oscar did a pretty good job. Even tho I didn’t know Oscar personally, but Michael did a great job portraying a person he probably didn’t know as well. I liked how the movie showed Oscar sort of being like a drug dealer, him being in jail and sort of having anger issues, to him losing his job and wanting to make money but ended up throwing away the weed and wanting to make his money the correct way. It showed how much he wanted to change not only for himself but for his family and most importantly his daughter.

  15. My 12 thoughts on the movie Fruitvale station , would have to be the setting and scene placements how the director gave you real streets of oakland Ca. and even the Bart station were it actually took place.also the music and sound. It was Bay area music so it helped show the setting and give that bay area vibe. The sounds like the sounds of fire works but in his daughter’s mind she thought gunshots.the foreshadowing like the example i gave or the dog being killed and no justice for it. Also the acting i felt like they did a good role of playing an ordinary person trying to survive and make it in life..overall good movie if you understand the background. Very good use of realism . using mac dre music to show people getting hyped up and ready to dance and move i feel like that was important especially that particular song at least.

To begin prior to this class I had already seen the movie Fruitvale Station. I believe it to already have been more than a year since I had watched it, but the effect of it was still the same. To further explain this the character roles and emotions were the most captivating for me. Although I knew each scene and how the movie was going to play out, it still left me with the same connection in emotions and taken in with suspense at the last scene when the police arrived until the end of the movie. Indeed did the entire movie capture Oscar as a “good guy” but it was done in a way to make it realistic as I believe the same was done for the police. They were first presented to be brutal and harsh toward Oscar and his friends however, just at the moment when Oscar got shot the realistic character was revealed as the lead cop held him. He did not leave Oscar to suffer alone. Both emotions were conveyed very well to capture a sense of desperation and sorrow that I believe lead to one to feel alike at that moment.
The arrangement of how the shot of Sophina and Taitiana was taken as it cut to them talking in the shower was formed well in a way as the start of and the most hurtful of hardships to come as it was presented with a dark shade with the use of the blue color lens. This was used to make the scene gloomy and the soft low tone that was used as they were talking brought the distress of emotions that came as Taitiana asked for her dad. With the silence then as each had a sort of stoic look toward at each other the scene cut which was done for the better. One may leave the rest to their imagination of what came next, however even cutting that scene was not with the loss of grievance toward the characters.
Through the movie I did not focus particularly toward the music or sound but one particular scene that I was captured by was at the moment when the camera was focused on Oscar in the hospital bed, it switches to a scene of him and his daughter. Seeing as he’s carrying her on his back and they are cheerfully playing together outside brought me to my core as I knew she was the most important thing in his life and must have been the last thought that came to mind as he passed away. The scene was shot bright fully with the sun shimmering on the camera but what I felt enhanced the moment was how they chose to have no sound which did not make it distorted or cause one to daze off from the screen but held that moment together to just focus on Oscar and Tatiana, not the music or dialog but just them two together.

I want to start off saying that this movie in my opinion was extremely well made and well thought out. The fact that it was a true story i think that they captured the feel and of it amazingly. From the sound to the scenery everything was well captured. I loved the way they shot most of the scenes kind of like a documentary over the shoulder type of look. It puts the viewer closer to the characters and the feeling that the director wants to give. The acting in the movie was well done and they picked out the actors pretty well in my opinion.

The sounds in this movie really captured the essence and feel of the Bay Area. As many of know they played a lot of Bay Area artist during the movie. The sounds are a big thing in a movie because it really sets the mood for the scene and sometimes like this movie shows where they come from and what kind of background they come from. Its really nice hearing some Bay Area music because most movies dont really show that old school kind of rap.

The setting was based in the Bay Area and you see a lot of the Bart station which most people are familiar with. Its nice to see a familiar setting in which some people have actually been and you can go to and see. Its soo awesome to see places in movies that you have actually been too and can go to. You also see some of the bay which is really nice too. Seeing the ocean in the background was beautiful. They really captured the the good and bad in the Bay.

  18. Fruitvale Station Review
    Quiz Score: 70%
    Edition 4e
I initially went into the movie with doubts. The Oscar Grant shooting remains a very sensitive button for many people, and with the Black Lives Matter protest movement becoming louder and louder, I was worried that this film would be either too harsh on Grasnt or diefy him to such an extent that he becomes unbelievable. I am, however, pleased to say that this movie defied my expectations and is actually very respectful to the late Mr. Grant. In the following three points, I will highlight what I liked about the film.
    1. Cinematography: The cinematography is very good. When the characters are in cramped spaces, the camera jostles and shakes as though it was a camcorder, making the film feel like a home movie. In one scene, set during a flashback to Oscar Grant’s brief stint in prison, his mother gives him a SEVERE talking to over his behavior, and storms out as he tries to catch up and say goodbye. Instead of following Oscar, the camera instead follows his mother from the front. As she walks off we lose view of Oscar Grant, driving home her anger over his behavior. The only miss-step I can find is the use of actual footage from the shooting at the start of the film. I felt it was inappropriately used, and that it would have been more effective if it had been inserted during the climactic scene where Grant is shot.
    2. Acting: The acting in this movie is good. Since Fruitvale Station is based off of the infamous shooting of Oscar Grant, I was worried that the director would make the main character unbelievable. I was worried that Oscar Grant would be portrayed as either a Christ-like figure unjustly murdered, or a satanic villain who should have been smothered in his crib. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to find that the actor portraying Oscar Grant treated him as a decent but flawed individual. He loves his daughter, is willing to help others and generally tries to do the right thing, but he is also a former convict, a reluctant drug-dealer and has apparently cheated on his girlfriend. What makes Michael B. Jordan’s performance great is that Oscar makes an effort to address his flaws and change for the better. This makes it all the more tragic when he is shot at the end of the movie. Another good use of actors is the performance of the two BART Officers in the climax. While at first they’re rough with Oscar and not above throwing slurs at him, you get the feeling that they’re just tired and want to go home. When the scuffle breaks out and Oscar Grant is shot, the previously antagonistic Officers are shown to be horrified and do all they can to save Oscar’s life. Even the cop who pulled the trigger has a humanizing moment when the camera focuses on his face, showing the shock and horror as he realizes what has happened. You can almost hear him thinking “This is a nightmare, I’m having a nightmare, and when I wake up I’m waking up with a scream.” It would have been easy for the director to take the easy route and simply portray the policemen as a bunch of incompetent racists, but instead by providing these humanizing moments he shows that the Oscar Grant shooting was a tragedy, not a political cause.
    3. Finally, the sound and music was well done, though I didn’t care as much for the latter. I’m not a huge fan of rap music, but I did like how it was treated as though it was a part of the world, rather than simply being treated as a separate part. Most of the sounds we hear are what one would normally find in a large city: Cars, the wind, people yammering, and (Rather ominously) sirens. Even the BART trains become ominous each time they appear, their passing being marked by a banshee-like wail.

  19. The movie Fruit-Vale Station I felt was a very good movie in the sense of seeing police brutality and a police officer murder a man for no reason and it touches on what happens in a lot the parts of our society today as we know it. Oscar displays a man who simply wants to provide for his family has a daughter has a wife his wife is pregnant, its New Years day and Oscar seems to be having a good day with his mother and other family members and even before that day Oscar was starting to try and take a different path and stay away from drugs and putting himself at risk in the scene when Oscars mother is visiting him in jail and Oscar is sitting on the rocks near the ocean reminiscing about his past life of being a criminal and gets in an altercation with a rival inmate. Causing Oscars mother to leave and walk away while he is screaming for her to talk to him but she leaves then he comes back to reality and almost decides he wants to be different and he would later dispose of the marijuana he had but didn’t sell it.

Furthermore throughout the whole movie there is a variety of Bay Area rap music being played while Oscar is driving in multiple scenes he’s listening to Mac Dre and the Jacka. It gives you a real sense of where they come from and the taste in music that was used in the movie and its easy to relate to if you are familiar with Bay Area Music but, the movie is also able to harness a huge amount of emotion through Oscar throughout the movie the scene where Oscar is getting gas and as he goes on the phone he hears the car hit the dog that he’d seen and he runs over and picks the dog up and carries it off to the side of the road and is shouting for help and it the dog is dying in his arms and it cuts to a close up of Oscar looking down at the dog and it kind of foreshadows the sense of life and death to Oscar even if the scene wasn’t an actual event that had happened it still presents the idea to Oscar to change for the better and for the sake of his family. There were numerous over the shoulder shots in a variety of scenes throughout out the film but the most captivating was when Oscar and his buddies were being detained due to the altercation with the old rival inmate that he had problems with in prison and the shot of the cop standing over Oscar then shoots him in the back and it comes to a close up of Oscars face and it is shocked and he says to the cop in his last words ” I have a daughter ” and all of his past memories he had are flashing before him while he is bleeding out and dying.

The film was shot a lot like today’s documentaries and you could tell it was some what on a budget but it still was a very good film however, the movie uses a lot of good close up shots in very dramatic scenes throughout the movie and cuts in dramatic sequences and will switch to a flashback that Oscar is haves throughout the movie. and there is a lot of extended scenes in the movie where it fades on to a different one a lot of the scenes shot in this movie that show Oscar’s struggle of having to worry about being financially stable and worry about job security and being unemployed not being able to provide for your family has to be a awful feeling. Being that the movie was based off of a true events that had occurred in the area that we live in is crazy and is also another reason that I liked this movie and at the Bart Train station and I felt the acting for the most part was actually very good throughout the whole movie and it kind of makes you attached Oscar’s acting in the movie was touching in scenes of happiness within his family and seeing his moving to become better and search for a job and try to provide for his family. In addition to the good acting a lot of the scenes when Oscar is driving it almost seems that you are riding along with him in the front seat its captivating to see this film and see how it relates to a lot of today’s matters across the country i was satisfied with this movie and don’t have much bad to say about it.

Fruitvale Station proved to live up to the emotionally charged expectation that I had anticipated. From the very first scene when we hear the sirens as Oscar gets up, to the fireworks going off in the streets on New Years Eve, this movie laid heavily on anticipation of tragedy. The choice to show real documented footage of the tragic event in the beginning of the film allowed the viewer to be reminded that this was real and it also captivated the viewers attention to follow how this tragedy could have occurred. The way the movie was shot was equally captivating. The movie had a very documentary like feel which kept the viewer reminded that these were “real” events and the choice of the dutch shot as Oscar lies on the ground bleeding forced us to experience the pain with him. The movie gave good contrast with scenes and color choices. The movie was primarily grey and lacked color but the utopian scene when Oscar has Tatiana on his back is the most color filled/soft lit portion of the whole movie. This scene signifies that something has changed, it demonstrates death without even saying it. The world that Oscar lived in was grey, dark, and bland yet the moment right before his death or directly after is peaceful and bright.

  21. Fruitvale Station was a great movie and emotional movie, and even thought it was made a few years ago, it is still a very relatable topic. The acting that took place during it was one of the things I enjoyed the most about; there was a great stage presence with what Michael B. Jordan, and the other actors, brought to it, during the hospital scene when they were all in waiting room, you could feel the raw and intense emotion going through all of them and it made feel all the more real. Another main thing that I enjoyed was the screenwriting; it had a very strong script and all the characters were really well written. The dialogue of when Oscar and Sophina were talking at her grandmother’s house had a snappy dialogue and setting, and made it seem like a normal fight like any couple would have together. The way Coogler shot this too made seem like you were right next to all the characters during the duration of the movie, like you were in the crowded BART with them enjoying yourselves with the music and dancing, or running with Oscar and Tatiana, it was like you were next to them and going through what they went through.

  22. The movie “Fruitvale Station” is about the death of Oscar Grant. The movie is great and a emotional roller coaster. As a movie there were points were I smiled and points were I was sad and that made it a great movie. Though personally didn’t enjoy the editing in the very beginning, on how the director decided to edit the actual footage of Oscar Grant’s death. To me it questioned, am I about to watch a movie or a documentary. The first few seconds or minutes of a movie is suppose to grab the viewers attention just like a hook in a essay. “Fruitvale Station” is a movie based on Oscar Grant, not a documentary of Oscar Grant. So when editing the footage before the actual film it felt questionable and would be something I would choice to edit out of the movie. I felt like it was just giving away the ending of the film also removing the entire build up of Oscars death. Yet I can see why director Ryan Coogler decided to go that path. It helps grabs the viewer in a different way. If anyone is interested in this movie it’s probably because they heard of Oscar Grant. To give the audience a reason to stick around by questioning the viewers, questions such as “Who’s this guy?” and “What’s his story”? A way for the audience to continue to watch the movie while paying close attention to Oscar and why his death was so significant.
In the end of the film, I was emotional invested to Oscar Grant. The movie was great but a-lot of it came from good screenwriting. Throughout the film Oscar Grant wasn’t a good guy nor a bad guy. He was just a person with struggle just like anyone else. A normal person throughout the film and the screenwriting really captured that. An example would be the scene were he picks up crabs for his mother at the place he use to work at. During that time Oscar helps a stranger but also begs for his job back after being fired for being late to work. I think this scene was a significant example because Oscar is seen to be imperfect. Sure he helps someone but he isn’t this amazing figure, he is just irresponsible. Someone who is shown throughout the film trying to work on being a better father. This doesn’t make him a bad guy nor a victim but depicts him as a normal human, so when he is murdered from a officer, it becomes more significant, because you don’t just see Oscar being killed but a innocent human being unjustly murdered by a officer. The screenwriting was top notch, but the cinematography was also effective in telling the story of Oscar Grant. The way the camera was shacking and moving was almost as if a ghost was following Oscar and vlogging the events unfolding. This use of cinematography makes it feel as if we are closer to Oscar were as if it were steady shots the entire time, it would feel more like a typical flick. The shaking and moving helps make it feel as if you were there walking with Oscar. This builds a connection between the viewer and the main character which makes his passing more significant to the viewer. A example would when Oscar is walking down the street in search of a bathroom. The entire event the camera is following Oscar, as if you were holding the camera walking with him.

Fruitvale Station was a phenomenal film. There were so many various elements embedded in the film that made it so intriguing. First of all, the music really set the tone for the film. The setting was in the Bay Area of course, and in the Bart scene before the ball dropped, and when Oscar was driving, Ryan made sure to incorporate music from rappers like Mac Dre and The Jacka, who are both very famous in the Bay Area. This gave a good feel to the film, and really enhanced the setting and how people really react when they hear that type of music playing. Another aspect of the film that I thought was really great was the camerawork when Oscar was going to pick up his daughter from her school/day care. The camera came from behind Oscar, giving the feel for the scene kind of mysterious, as if something bad was going to happen, when in reality this was one of the more playful shots in the film. It was contradicting, but added a suspenseful feeling of what was going to happen. We touched about this next topic in class a little bit, but another aspect of the film that was a nice touch was when Oscar’s baby mama and their daughter were in the shower, and his daughter asked where daddy was. The scene cut after she asked that, leaving what her mom said to her and the daughter’s reaction to our imagination. I think this was a smart thing to do, especially since it is hard to explain tragic events to children. Cutting after that left the viewer (myself), with the thought of wondering what happened, and thinking about the scene a lot. For me, that was one of the more harsh scenes, especially since it was right after Oscar’s death. Also, a lot of foreshadowing was evident in the film. For example, when Oscar’s mom tells him to take Bart, the firework guns going off and Oscar’s daughter being scared he was going to get shot, and the dog getting hit by a car. Each of these events that happened set us up for something we had a feeling was coming, especially since the tragic event that happened at Fruitvale Station is so well known.

  24. Fruit vale Station is a movie much different from the usual Hollywood plot line I am use to. Ryan Coogler had a difficult task at hand, but managed to sell the movie to me though the cinematography work, Acting, and sound. These elements, helped the most in capturing the emotional attachment, much needed in a film like this, to the main character Oscar, played by Michael B Jordan.

The Cinematography work can be considered controversial to some people, but I believe it added to what the movie was actual trying to convey. The shaky cam work makes you feel grounded in Oscars environment, and at times makes you feel as if you are there with Oscar in his car, or with his homies on Bart. One part in the movie, where the cinematography really stood out to me, is when Oscar was shot. The upside down camera angle really sold that scene to me, and was the realization point that Oscar was going to die.

In a movie like this, it is essential to build up the emotional bonds to the main characters. I believe that Jordan, especially really killed the main role in this movie. Along with his girl friend and daughter, I felt the pain and struggle these characters were going through in the movie. Each actor didn’t over do their roles, and were very believable, and related-able characters. In the end, Jordan built up a character to grieve over, something that most actors can’t pull off.

To top it all off, the sound in the movie was the final factor to being immersed in this movie. Along with the cinematography, the sound work did a great job putting me in Oscars shoes. The music playing in the background, crazy remarks from Oscars friends, and the sounds from the Bart station was what made the movie most relate-able to me. I liked when Coogler decided to cut the sound out in the parts of the movie when the emotions were at its highest. Overall I feel that the sound in this movie excelled and was a crucial part in my emotional investment to the main character.

  25. Having already seen the movie before we watched it in class, it was a great movie and interesting to see a real-life situation that I was aware of in New Years of 2009 come to life in a movie. I especially liked the following 3 techniques used by the director:

    1) Shots/Scenery. The director did a great job capturing the Bay Area and made you feel like you were there. Anyone familiar with the Bay Area would quickly recognize the many shots including shots of the BART stations. The director also did a great job with the camera work in various aspects of the film, including at the end when the camera went from a close-up of Oscar’s mother, to Oscar being operated on, to a medium flashback shot with Oscar and his daughter.

    2) Music. The music chosen for the film was mostly Bay Area rap/hip hop by artist including The Jacka and Mac Dre, which anyone familiar with both artist would quickly recognize. This helped capture an authentic Bay Area/East Bay feel and culture and made you feel like you were there riding alongside Oscar while he was driving. The music used at the end of the film sounded like something appropriate for a send off for Oscar.

    3) Character Development. The film went from showing Oscar in a conversation with his girlfriend about cheating, to attempting to get his job back, to being in prison, to dumping out a large bag of weed, to helping a wounded dog, to spending time with his family and girlfriend on his mothers birthday. Knowing nothing about Oscar personally, the film did a great job portraying Oscar as a troubled kid who was trying to straighten out his life that unfortunately ended in tragedy.

  26. Fruitvale station was a heart-wrenching movie to watch, as the demise of the protagonist Oscar Grant (portrayed by Michael B. Jordan) was revealed at the beginning of the film, the viewer being reminded toward the end of the film after the unraveling of Oscar’s last day.
The mise-en-scene of the movie is verisimilar, depicting Oscar’s day from the start of his day, and what happened that lead to his death. This choice was made to cling more or less to the actual events that had occured. We discover his whereabouts (Oakland, California), his family and friends and perhaps the evolution of his psyche (the desire to better himself). The mise-en-scene seems to me like any other day, not just in Oakland: Dropping of the kid(s) at school, gong to work/dropping off to work, visiting friends, planning New Year’s celebration…
Michael B. Jordan’s portrayal of a real person who experienced a real-life tragedy was great, to “become” Oscar Grant, and to attempt to think and act like him must have been a heavy experience throughout the entire shooting of the film. This also goes for the actors and actresses who played Oscar’s family and friends, being in such a scenario.
About the editing, on one hand what may have confused some people was the main flashback around the middle of the movie, when Oscar was in prison. There was just a cut to a past event that seemingly came out of nowhere, with little to no indication that this event had happened in the past. On the other hand, in a different perspective, the mid-shot chosen of Oscar sitting down by the water, perhaps contemplating life decisions and/or his past, can show that he may be thinking, especially with the chosen spot (by the water, looking in the distance) without company.
The sort of music that was chosen for this film was specific as to imply the realness of his whereabouts, being Oakland. Bay Area rap familiarized the viewers with the locale (at least, those who are familiar with the music style). Not much of other music or sounds were included in the movie, perhaps to induce the real-life feel, aka there’s no music playing in the background of your life. The silence makes the events and emotions seep in, which sounds ironic considering sounds and music re meant to enhance the part of the movie being experienced, but silence, especially during a tragic event, feels more fitting depending on the circumstances.

  27. Fruitvale station was a very interesting and relative movie to me being that I used to catch bart a lot living in Oakland. I liked the choice of music because I recognized the bay area artist so it was very realistic and fit the setting. My favorite scene was when Micheal B Jordan (Oscar Grant) was laying on the ground after being shot in the back and the camera happen to go very low and twist upside as if I was laying on the ground and looking up myself.. Also the foreshadowing and flashback was something that made the movie better especially when he was in jail and the other gang assaulted him which led up to them fighting on the train. Overall I loved it!!!!

  28. Fruitvale Station was an incredible movie by Ryan Coogler. He did an awesome job of capturing the essence of a real life story. By following through with all the shots in capture and connecting the scene with what happened when the dog was killed on the road and he feeling that emotion of pain and also with Oscar losing his job and he later realizing the road he was going down was not the right one for him neither his daughter. Ryan capture what people everybody knew about Oscar Grant life and added a little more to his story for it to be more relatable to our everyday life.
Also with the acting off all the characters was done very well with not one single person over doing their part in the movie. Micheal B. Jordan play the part of Oscar very well and did just enough acting for people to be able to see Oscar within him when he was shot at train station. The words he kept repeating “I have a daughter” played a big part because he just getting the stage of changing his lifestyle for himself, daughter, girlfriend and family. Also the mother leaving the jail was an epic scene with the she been fed up with what her son was continuing to do to his daughter and life. He chasing after his mother really showed that she really got to him.
Lastly the sound in the movie capture every part of that scene. The most memorable has to do with when Oscar and his friends where on the Bart and the countdown was about to begin and they started to play Mac Dre on the bus. The really showed that they were into the celebration of that night and the Bay Area. I think with the intensity when Oscar was detained on the ground and everybody was making noise I think that was music of its own because that showed the audience that this was injustice the police was doing to an innocent man at that time and when he was shot and all the sudden it went silent capturing the gun shot of someone can bring a community together.

Question: Realism is concerned with ______________ and ______________.
Student answered: a) representation; the actual
Correct answer is: a) representation; the actual

    MISE-EN-SCENE
Well, we obviously know what kind of scene this is. It looks like a bad part of Hayward from where he was at in the beginning of the movie. It had a Bay Area feel to it, which you may or may not relate to. Fruitvale Station brings you to a hard living area with mothers walking there children to school and young black men sagging there pants and watching cars go by. What Oscar is wearing definitely goes along with the scene and feel of his surroundings. In the other scenes like when he secretly gives his daughter another fruit snack for lunch when him and his girlfriend drops her off to her daycare. Or when he picks her up from daycare and he plays around and race her to the car. That scene shows how much him and his daughter are really close. You can automatically tell that his daughter really loves him and was pretty much a daddy’s girl.
    SOUND
The sound of the movie sounded pretty realistic to me. It didn’t have any odd music or effects at all for me. The sound of the shot from the gun had a shocking and powerful sound that pushed you back to your seat in shock because something crazy just happened. The kind of music he was listening to in the beginning of the movie while he’s listening to music and driving his car around the Hayward area went hand and hand because I think the audience would be either surprised or confused if he was listening to 60’s Disco or 80’s Rock music which doesn’t make since of what he is wearing or the scenery. I did like the scene when he’s racing his daughter you this slow motion scene and a soft music playing the back ground with Oscar and his daughter laughing and making comments on who is going to win. I also did notice the sound from the phone when ever Oscar texted or called his friends and family. It didn’t sound cheesy or fake. It really did sound like an old school cell phone.
    MUSIC
Seriously, I loved the scene when they were in the train station trying to go to San Francisco for New Years Eve but they didn’t make there to see the firework so they end up playing some Mac Dre and party on the train which made me want to join and dance with them. If you are from the bay area or know have family that you visit from the bay area. You should know who Mac Dre is or at least know a few of songs. That whole scene reminded me of what the Bay Area is all about and it made me feel proud that I even live in the Bay Area. That was one of my favorite scene with that song but I didn’t like the type of song they chose for when Oscar is driving around Hayward. I didn’t like the music. It sound like it was wannabe rapper that’s trying to rap but can’t rap at all. That’s just my personal opinion.
    SUMMARY
Over all I did enjoy this movie but I was it does make me think that anything can happen tomorrow and he choices that you make can effect you and others around you. Just knowing that Oscar Grant was shot and killed at the age of 22 years old is sad and scary because I’m the same age as him when he was killed. He was so young and had a lot of living to do for his girlfriend, his mother, his friends, and most importantly his daughter. It makes me appreciate that I can sill live another day but knowing that Oscar doesn’t have that option anymore and it makes me very sad for his family that loved him very much. I really hope after that happened to him that it doesn’t happen again. Rest In Peace Oscar. You’ll be missed and never forgotten.

This is my second time watching Fruitvale Station and I enjoyed watching it. There are thinks I noticed that i did not notice the first time watching it.

Honestly, the only think I would have edited on Fruitvale Station was how Ryan Coogler put the short clip at the beginning about the live footage. Do to having this clip at the beginning kind of gave me an idea of what was going to happen. I would have put it at the end because then it throughout the movie it will have your audience guessing what will happen next or at least that what I like. I really liked the scene Coogler included with the dog getting hit by the car because it foreshadows Oscar’s death on how they were innocent and got their lives taken. Also i liked the little flashbacks he gave us of Oscar. For example, when Oscar is giving is daughter a piggy back ride and having a great time at this moment I had a feeling Oscar was going to die.

The music and sound I really enjoyed how it was used in the movie. For example when they are at New Years Eve dinner with Oscar’s family and they are playing some nice peaceful and relaxing music but then when they get on the Bart the sound sound increases your can hear the Bart on the railing and then they go to playing music from their phone to speakers. Once I heard the music I just felt like i was definitely in the Bay Area.

Lastly, I liked the cinematography. the way everything was shot I believe had a nice flow to it. It always felt like I was right by Oscar’s side the whole movie. For example, when Oscar is in his car with his friend it felt like i was right outside the door, when Oscar’s family is having the New Years Eve dinner, and lastly at the Bart when they are in the train it just feels like I am right there listening to music with them having a great time.

I had wanted to watch this movie for a while when I saw it was on Netflix. The fact that we had to watch it for this class and the discussions about it only heightened my appreciation for it.

What caught my attention the most was the sounds and lack thereof in this film. Throughout the movie there are a lot of moments of almost complete silence in which the director wants to emphasize what IS being heard. When Wanda is walking down the hall towards her son’s dead body, all you hear are her footsteps. It makes you sort of hold your breath in anticipation for what might be around the corner. He also uses this in the scene where Oscar is wheezing on the BART station ground. Literally all you can hear is his struggle for life and the sound of it slowly leaving him.

Another thing that I noticed was how the director does a very good job of putting the audience in the story with the characters the whole movie. He uses a lot of shaky, handheld camera shots. It feels real and not over-edited like they could have done. When Oscar is laying on the ground, they showed the stretcher coming towards him and the shot was upside down forcing you to watch what’s happening from his eyes. Also the addition of the real footage in the beginning and the end of the film puts everything into perspective. That small detail really tied the whole thing together for me. It showed that these were all real people, this really happened and it’s not just some fabricated Hollywood story. It forces you to understand the reality of what happens daily in the Bay and so many other places.

The director’s use of foreshadowing throughout the movie adds something, but only after you’ve seen the whole thing from beginning to end. When the dog gets hit by the car it shows that sometimes we’re just in the wrong place at the wrong time and that’s what happened to Oscar Grant. The guy who taunts Oscar in jail sets up his entire death. That guy instigated the fight that lead to Oscar getting shot. Knowing what we know, the conversation that Tatiana and Oscar have before he leaves is extremely telling. She says, “Don’t go. I’m scared. I hear guns outside.” He promises her that he’s going to be fine and promises that he’ll take her to Chuck E. Cheese the next day but the viewers know somehow that that won’t happen.

The last thing that I thought as the credits rolled was the irony of the whole situation. It all takes place on New Year’s Eve, a holiday that is supposed to be about new beginnings and starting over. Oscar was in the middle of that process, giving up smoking and dealing, looking for a job, trying to get his life together. It was all taken away from him, the world never got to see what Oscar Grant could’ve become because his past came back to haunt him.

  32. After the very first time I had watched Fruitvale Station, I recommended this film to some of my friends and I ended up watching about 3 times in one week. The main reason why I like this film is because its based on a true story, and the way Ryan Coogler made this film was amazing from start to finish.
Music: Music plays a big roll in a film in my opinion due to the fact that it gives a certain persepective on someones background. In this case, For example, Oscar Grant is driving down the street right before he calls his mom and he is playing Mac Dre and The Jacka. This gives the vieweres a feeling of the Bay Area, and you could bascially tell where Oscar came from and what was around in the area he lived around.
Acting: The acting in this movie was very well done both by Michael(Oscar) and Octavia(Oscar’s mom). What I really liked about Michael’s acting was that he really showed us a good view on how Oscar was as a person, both good and bad. His emotions throughout the movie played great, and overall he really couldnt have done a better job. MIchael had the job to show everyone the good side and bad side of Oscar, mainly going from how he was not responsible to becoming a better person for his family. Octavia also had a main roll in how she had to play the mom. Her emotions were expressed perfectly at the right times, She acted out amazingly as if it was her own son that had got shot.
Screenwriting: I liked the way Ryan Coogler showed foreshadowing throughout the movie. For example, as they are driving to Sophina’s sisters house to drop off Tatiana, it captures a shot of Tatiana seeing people set off fireworks, which are explotions and kind of giving you that feeling that Oscar’s time is coming, knowing he is going to get shot. Another example, Is when Oscar was at the gas station and the dog he had found got ran over and was killed. In my opinion this was showing that this poor dog was killed for no reason, then later on same thing haooens to Oscar, killed for no reason.

  33. This is the second time that I have watched the movie Fruitvale Station. I liked this movie because I thought it was interesting that it was based on a true story that happened so close to home. However, the movie does leave me curious as to how good of a job was done at representing Oscar’s life and real situation. I wonder if the movie does Oscar justice in showing his innocence, or showing all of the actions of the cops and the other people involved.

After paying closer attention to the movie when watching it for the second time, I noticed some of the sounds in the film. Towards the beginning of the movie in the background I could hear a lot of sirens. I also noticed it when Oscar was in the bedroom talking to his girlfriend about how he lost his job, the sirens started to get louder. The sirens seemed to signify trouble in multiple situations. The sirens were a foreshadow of the bad that was going to happen.

Another aspect that made the movie more interesting was the editing. There were times when the scene would speed up or slow down as to create an ominous feeling. For example, when Oscar went to pick up his daughter from daycare, as he ran towards her it went to a slow motion shot. In my opinion this created a bad feeling as if something bad was going to happen when actually nothing bad did happen. The slow motion editing may have just been used to emphasize and cherish the last time Oscar would pick up his daughter. Another example would be the shot of the Bart train leaving the station. The train flew by in the shot and was gone in an instant almost as to signify the end of a chapter.

One other aspect that caught my attention was the screenwriting. A particular scene was at the Bart station after Oscar was shot. Oscar said repeatedly, “I have a daughter.” I thought this was interesting because as an audience we don’t know if that is what Oscar really said after being shot or not. However, whether he did say that or not, I think putting this in the movie builds the emotion and shows Oscar’s good character and innocence. With these last words it made me think about all the good he had done with his daughter throughout the day. It showed the struggles he faced, and showed an innocent man with a family getting shot for no reason.

  34. I was happy when I found out that we would be watching Fruitvale Station in class because unlike Mad Max I have seen it before. I was ready to watch this movie with a closer lens and hopefully notice things that I hadn’t the first time. There are aspects of the movie that I feel could have been done better but as a whole, I think that this movie is a well done portrayal of the horrendous event that took place at the Fruitvale Station. Any director when taking on a task such as directing a movie with such emotional substance is a task that I’m sure isn’t taken lightly and Ryan Coogler was no exception.

One of the aspects of the movie that I enjoyed and thought that Coogler did very well was the use of music to help portray meaning in the movie. Being from the Bay Area I loved that the scenes when it showed Oscar Grant driving through bay area streets listening to artists like Mac Dre and the Jacka. In real time since this movie was released the Jacka has since been shot by an unknown gunman in Oakland. Although this doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with this movie per se, I think it proves how cruel the streets can be in certain areas of the world which was prevalent in Fruitvale Station. The use of the Bay Area music makes the movie very real for viewers especially those who have heard these artists first hand; It brings it closer to home.

Another aspect of the movie that I enjoyed was how Coogler allowed the viewers to see the text threads that Grant received the whole day leading up to his death. Although the texts didn’t necessarily give up any vital information of what was inevitably going to happen to Grant, instead it allowed the viewer to feel like they were walking in Grants shoes. He was just as normal as you and I and was going through his day like any normal person. This build up allowed the viewer to understand how unfair Grant’s treatment inside Fruitvale Station was.

Lastly an aspect of the movie that I feel Coogler did very well was the camera work. The cinema verite was very thoughtfully done by Coogler, and helped by adding a sense of eeriness throughout the film. It allowed me as the viewer to realize that certain parts of the movie had greater significance than others. The dutch angle that Coogler used when he did a closeup on Grants face after he was fatally shot was an excellent choice because it made the movie seem like it was actual real time footage rather than a remake.

This was my second time watching this movie, since I had to also watch it in Cinema 11 last semester.

One great aspect about this movie is the sound. The sound throughout the whole movie makes you feel like you’re actually in Oakland with Oscar. The people making the film could have done it a bit differently, but they decided to make it feel as real as possible. From the Bart train passing by, to the rap song, to the police sirens in the background, it felt like I was there.

Another great aspect is the acting. Each actor helped play their role as we saw the characters should be. There are many bad actors out there where we still can understand the characters role in the film, but the actor isn’t playing that character as well as they should. Each actor played their role just fine with no complaints.

A third aspect is the cinematography. The director could have gone many different ways with making this particular movie, but instead made it the way it is now. It helped Oscar feel like a normal guy going about his life (which he probably was in real life, I’m not saying he wasn’t) it showed his bond with his family and his friends in his life, and showed the guilt on the police officers’ faces when the gun went off. The director could’ve made Oscar more of a bad guy and the police a good guy, or possible something else, but decided to take this direction.

  36. This was my first viewing of Fruitvale Station and it was enjoyable. The acting in the movie was great. I’ve always been a fan of Michael B. Jordan and it’s so cool that he can go from a comedy role in “That Awkward Moment” to a believeable dramatic role in “Fruitvale Station”. Octavia’s character Wanda didn’t have much screentime but i loved the prison scene. In that scene she is a believeable mother that loves her son but once conflict happens, you can see in her expression her disappointment. The Mise-en-scene of the film is very different from Coogler’s other work. I’ve watched Creed already and Fruitvale station gives off a different feel. The environment, language, and characters made Fruitvale Station feel very realistic when you compare it to Creed. The editing of some scenes is pretty unique. One scene in particular that i thought was good editing was the slow motion scene when Oscar is holding his daughter on his shoulder. The scene was in slow motion, with no sound, and hasn’t appeared in any other part of the film. When Coogler decided to make it with no sound, i thought it was because it represents what Oscar wants in life and what he’s losing. Throughout the film, everything he did was for his girlfriend and daughter. He loved his daughter and after getting shot, he’s realized what he has lost.

  37. The camerawork in Fruitvale Station stands out to me. The way the film is shot and the way the camera follows the subjects provides a very raw and real feeling. This is especially true in the Bart station scenes. think the choice to actually film at Bart really enhances the realistic feel of this film for me. To go along with this, the way the film is edited makes this movie standout to me. As we talked about in class, the movie includes some formal shots to emphasize the strong bond between Oscar and his daughter. The way these formal shots are seamlessly incorporated into the films more informal style really catches my attention. This film, to me, is a great balance between a sort of raw documentary style movie, and a more formal, traditional drama. Another thing that I think is worth mentioning is how much emphasis is put on family in this movie. throughout the movie, we see Oscars strong relationship with his daughter, girlfriend, mom, and other family members as well as his friends. I think this element of the film is something the creators of the film didn’t really have much choice in. I think movie like this, about such a sensitive topic, wouldn’t work without the family’s approval. The filmmaker has to portray the victim in a typical way, with strong family values, in order to gain this approval and have a successful film.

First I’d like to address that I thought that this was an interesting film. I had heard about the incident at Fruitvale Station back in 2009, but I thought Ryan Coogler did a great job making this movie, I also liked how Coogler played as Oscar Grant. This film provided a good tribute to Oscar Grant’s story.
The Filming style is very Unique in the movie, it was a shaky type style, very similar to how someone filming a home video. Now this choice of film style usually gives me a headache, but this film was different. It was pleasant to watch, and gave the movie more of a home feel to it, as if you were in the movie, going about the day with Oscar, experiencing a bit of the character’s world. This film style also gave off an ominous feeling to it as well. Coogler’s choice in this style of filming was appropriate for a film like this.
The foreshadowing in the film was interesting as well, like the scene when Oscar is filling his gas tank, and sees a dog get hit by a car, and no one but Oscar tries to help the dog. If someone hasn’t heard about the Fruitvale Station incident, or has not seen the movie, they could pick up from the dog scene that this is possibly associated with Oscar’s future because of how the tone was set from the ominous style of filming. That is the link here this “ominous”, feeling that Coogler helped set up, everything just falls into place while watching this film.
The editing was quite good. Now when the film starts we don’t get much background on Oscar Grant’s life, but there is one cut that happens near the middle of the film when Coogler decides to show a flashback of when Oscar was in jail. As the action starts to rise in this scene, it cuts back to Oscar in the present. In this sequence viewers have a better understanding of Oscar’s character, even though the scene doesn’t go far into Oscar’s whole past life, it’s enough. Again Coogler’s choices of both editing and filming are quite appropriate in this film.

Everything about this movie was done so well. The screenwriting did a great job depicting Oscar Grant as just a regular person everyone can relate to. The director was unbiased by showing the good sides of Oscar such as scenes with him playing with his daughter, helping a customer in the store and his relationship with his mother but also showing his negative side such as him in jail fighting with another inmate. Oscar was someone most people can relate to like his struggle to provide for his family and to become a better person.
There was also a lot of humor in the movie which made it more enjoyable to watch and got the audience more involved. The director showcased the event of oscars death by police brutality in an unbiased way, by simply showing exactly what happened which was still extremely sad and heartbreaking.
The acting in this movie was very important, or more so the actors chosen. There was a lot of no name actors in the film which i feel was a good choice because it made the movie seem more realistic but also had some well known actors which was also important to keep the audience interested in the film.
The music chosen in the film is significant to the story of oscar grant. There were a lot of underground bay area music that was played which helps create an emotional tie to people in the bay area making this movie more realistic and closer to home considering this event happened in the bay area. It was more significant for the director to play the underground music then if he would have chosen mainstream songs.

  40. This was one of the movies I seemed to put on hold when scrolling through my netflix. But when it started gaining popularity, I finally gave it a shot last summer. I really liked it the first time and enjoyed it even more the second time (in class). The second run through of the movie, I have come to appreciate and notice a couple more things. Both the first time and second time, I really admired the acting in the movie. Michael B Jordan did a great job portraying a young adult struggling to get a job and getting his life back together. I really liked how he so easily switched off from a tough drug dealer to a caring and sensitive family man. The way he treated her daughter and cared for his mom’s birthday showed how family orientated he was. Another thing I appreciated was the editing in the movie. I loved how they portrayed a real life scene of the shooting in the beginning and switched to how that day happened and to the end where there was a gathering of people to come support Oscar Grant after his death. What really caught my eye was the slow motion scene where he was racing his daughter after school. This slow motion scene gave a sense of sensitive and important memory he had. How he cherished that moment and how it felt a long time. The music in this movie was great as well. My favorite part was when they were playing Mac Dre on Bart and everyone started to dance to the music. This gave respect to the influence of bay area music. As well as the exciting music, I also loved the choice of silence. When Oscar was shot and there was a deafening tone gave a really good feel how in that moment everything became more serious and threatening. There was also silence with the moments they were waiting in the emergency room. The silence in those scenes showed tension and suspense in result of Oscar being shot.

  42. I really liked the different shot techniques used in this film. My all time favorite was the dutch angle after Oscar has been shot and is laying on the floor. This scene connected me the most to Oscar’s character because you really feel like you’re laying there next to him. I thought the acting was pretty mediocre but i feel that it added to the rawness of the movie and made it feel more realistic like a documentary. They should have added more music to the film because it adds more suspense and emotion. There were only certain scenes where the music is noticed and affects the viewer.

  43. Jordan Graham

    Fruitvale Station

Ryan Coogler did an excellent job of capturing a side of the Bay area that many, who don’t live here, don’t get to see. The camera work made it feel as though we were an ominous spirit following Oscar in his last walks of life. I got that feeling heavily in the scene at his mother’s house for her birthday. We didn’t really stop and focus on what the characters were talking about or fixate on how nice the evening played out it just seemed as though, from the audiences point of view, we were just floating around in a sort of peeping tom manner (no I am not calling the viewers perverts and peeping toms). I did love how this movie made you feel like you were a resident in the Bay. The dialogue depicted this wonderfully. The slang, the mannerisms, even the body language was done beautifully. Coogler knew the best way, in my opinion, of how to represent a culture that is overshadowed by the “going ons” of mainstream San Francisco. A perfect example of this was the scene right before they entered Bart to leave to San Fran. He panned the camera around, still in ominous fashion, and showed each one of Oscars friends uniqueness which to me was overlooked by the gravity of the story. His use of foreshadow was just as unique. I recall the scene where Oscar and his daughter are running out of the daycare in slow motion. This piece of cinematic language embraced the idea that his daughter would never catch him, that she would never have that chance to beat her father because soon he would be gone (as we knew from the beginning of the movie). What was interesting about that also to back this up was that he asked her if she had won playing freeze tag with her friends. The foreshadow with the dog being hit by the car was also a very good use of that tool. Oscar was killed for no reason so was the dog. I won’t say this movie was perfect but it was definitely close. Something different I would have done would be placing the actual Bart footage into the middle of the scene when Oscar was shot. To me I feel like that would have made it hit home a little harder seeing the real time footage at that particular moment (the fourth kind did something similar to this). I am happy that it shed more light to the issue of police brutality in our country. Oscar Grant was just one of many and the publicity this film received was able to tell not only his story but the stories of those who have been afflicted by this cancer.

  44. This was my first time watching Fruitvale Station and I honestly think that this is fantastic film.
There wasn’t much music in this film, but I really enjoyed the fact that the few songs that were played throughout the film were bay area rap songs. It made the movie more realistic to the characters and are in which the actual events took place, and it also gave people who may not come from the bay area a feel for what bay area culture was like in Oakland.
I also though that the scenery was excellent. Everything took place in Oakland, even the scene at Fruitvale station and it was another element that made this film more realistic. It truly captured the type of people in the area that Oscar was around all the time, as well as the area in which he lived. The streets and stores were all still bustling with people, and even showed the not so great parts.
Lastly, I really enjoyed the acting throughout the film. Every actor did an excellent job portraying their role, making the audience feel sympathy for each character. From the beginning, the audience is rooting for Oscar to give up his destructive lifestyle for the sake of Sophina and Tatiana and his mother, The audience is made to feel proud when he dumps out his weed and comes clean to Sophina about losing is job. We eel sympathy towards Sophina because she has a lot of trust issues due to Oscar’s past actions, but she still makes it work for the sake of family.

  45. The movie Fruitvale Station was a nice movie because it made us grab a feel of the experiences Oscar dealt with. For example when he was desperate to change his life around because the mother of his daughter was getting fed up with his selling weed. The intensity was felt when Oscar was getting ready to met up with the consumer. I believe that when the dog was hit and killed was a big sign of death in the movie whether it was someone close to Oscar or himself. Further down the movie Oscar was mostly shot in the film so it gave viewer an idea of how his life was shortened. The movies showed emotions from happiness to sadness. Wanda Jonson played a nice role once she saw his body, the reason she wanted to hug him was reflected to the time she walked away from him when he was incarcerated and he begged her for a hug witch was sad because she was also blaming herself for his death due to her encouraging him to go to San Fransisco in the Fruitvale Station.
