  1. I can see why the film Citizen Cane was such a successful and popular movie, particularly at it’s time. Everything from the revolutionary cinematography, to the special effects and lighting, were very well captured. It’s pretty neat that Citizen Cane was the first film ever to get a full focus shot recorded. Having the full focus definitely sets a different kind of perspective and atmosphere to the shot. For whatever reason the director wants us to be able to see everything that is going on in the shot. In the scene we see young Charlie Cane running around outside in the snow playing with his sled ROSEMARY. This full focus shot is showing the audience the inciting incident and also foreshadowing the whole meaning behind Rosebud which would be his lost childhood.

Another thing that must have really put audiences in “awwhh” back then, were the numerous effects that were used in this film, both onset and in the editing process. There were several different montages throughout this movie which mainly consisted of roughly 2-3 second shots being showed at a time in sequence. One of the montages even had a double exposure effect that was created by the editors. Also, whenever a character is engaging in a non-ethical manner, they are cast in shadow in the shot or they transition from light into shadow. A good example of this was when Charlie and his wife get into an argument near the end of the movie. Charlie ends up being cast into shadow and then strikes his wife in the face. Overall, I think that even compared to movies now days, Citizen Cane displays a fantastic job of editing and effects all around.

One way you can really see how this movie was well planned out, is the big commotion scene during the opera recital. We see a whole bunch of movement, choreography, and a rapid paced conundrum taking place. This scene does a good job with getting the heart rate up a little with all the music and the stress that is being put on the girl by the Italian instructor to perform. Lastly I think its fair to say that many supporting actors in this film were pretty exceptional but the actor who plays Charlies character really does a fantastic job. He does a great job playing both a charming, enthusiastic, and money driven businessman and then eventually an old, tired and angry nobody. Overall I really enjoyed watching this film and I think it is a great film to analyze.

  2. Despite being 75 years old, I can easily see how Citizen Kane became one of the most influential films of all time. Even before I saw it I’ve heard discuss what the ‘Citizen Kane’ is regarding other media as far as utilizing the strengths of the medium to create a true work or art.

I think that the lighting was top notch. I’m struggling to think of recent films that do so much with their lighting as Citizen Kane did. Much of it was brought up in class, and for good reason. One things I noticed was the very first scene of the reporters after the ‘Xanadu’ reel. We know about Kane at that point, but here we ‘see’ the reporters chattering about how to spin their story in the darkness of the room, light beaming through the windows but barely showing any more of the occupants than their sillhouettes. They aren’t important to Kane’s story, and aside from Thompson, none are named. One could also note that as they are trying to spin a story about ‘the most talked about man of our times’ rather than neccessarily representing it factually or accurately: or first time seeing any character interaction and already it’s tying in to the theme of trusting news media.

The cinematography was also very well shot and directed. I though its use to show us perspective of the characters reminiscing about Kane for Thompson was well though out. In particular I noticed the two shots of the opera scene. Firstly, we see it from Leland’s side, who has a good view, allowing us to see the whole set, even though he spends much of the opera clearly uninterested. But then we see it from Susan’s perspective, and once the curtains go up we only see her, front and center against the audience invisible in the lighting. First we see Kane completing Leland’s review, then later we see Susan reacting to it. This wouldn’t have worked if say, Susan was in the mood to talk during her first time meeting Thomson. There were other skillful cinematography techniques utilized but that was the one that stood out for me.

While it’s more regarding the screenplay, there’s something to note about ‘Rosebud’. It was established that while Kane had his fortunes, he was unable to buy what he wanted. His friends and coworkers left him, Susan left him, he had a massive private estate with empty space and statues he’d collected but probably never looked twice at. And among all of that was Rosebud. It’s highly doubtful that he didn’t know about it, but while he had it in his possession, and longed for what it reminded him of, like with Susan it was something he never truly had even when it seemed to be in his domain. Earlier in the movie he mentioned he was going to get some of his family’s things out of storage, so it’s likely he had it for years until it was tossed into the furnace like rubbish.

  3. The screenwriting in the sequence involving Charles Kane, Emily Kane, Susan Alexander and James W. Gettys is wonderful. The screenwriting in this sequence conveys the theme of isolation. In this sequence, James W. Gettys has forced Susan Alexander to write a note to Emily Kane about her affair with Charles Kane. When Emily receives the note, Charles and Emily show up to Susan’s house together. There at Susan’s house, they meet Gettys. Charles soon finds out that he is being blackmailed by Gettys. Gettys wants Charles to drop out of the race for governor of New York or Gettys will leak Charles’s affair with Susan to the newspaper. Ultimately, Charles doesn’t drop out of the race. In this sequence, Charles chooses himself over his family. Charles choosing himself over his family shows how he doesn’t think of anyone else but himself. Charles isolates himself in this sequence and throughout the movie by thinking about what he wants to do instead of thinking about how his actions affect the people around him.
Next, the sequence involving Charles Kane and Emily Monroe Norton Kane’s relationship from the honeymoon stage to their divorce. In this sequence they start off by wearing comfortable clothes at their dining room table. The table is decorated with a bunch of flowers and the setting is welcoming. Then as their relationship worsens they wear clothes that are more casual. The table is decorated with less flowers. At the end of their relationship, they wear formal clothes. They are sitting at the opposite ends of the table and there are no more flowers on the table. The setting, decor and properties in this sequence symbolizes the decay of Charles Kane and Emily Kane’s relationship. The design of this sequence conveys the message that all good things must come to an end.
Lastly, the scene involving Charles Kane and Susan Alexander Kane in their bedroom. The song “It Can’t Be Love” is playing during the scene when Susan and Charles are fighting in their bedroom. The music ends after Charles slaps Susan. The music in this scene conveys the theme of loss. Charles and Susan have lost their love for each other. Susan feels like Charles has put her in a cage and Charles does not see a problem with their relationship. Charles and Susan relationship is over and Charles is alone again. Charles is losing his wife and his mind.

  4. Citizen Kane is definitely a film that stands the test of time and was really engrossing for me. I really love the use of props in this film. For example when Susan and Charles are in their ridiculously sized mansion arguing over the statues, she is sitting in front of a jigsaw puzzle that is massive, under a fireplace which is also massive. There is also a scene in this same room where Charles walks in and goes across the room to sit in an almost throne-like armchair, next to a couch that is even larger. These scenes and props in the movie really gave me the feeling that Charles is almost consumed by his popularity and money, but is also shrouded in it’s shadow and influence while he attempts to rebuild his childhood happiness. Another scene that captured my interest regarding the props was the scene at the dinner table that shows us a passage of time and deterioration of Charles and Susan’s relationship by using different items on the table to evoke a different feeling on the viewer’s behalf.

Another aspect of this film that stood out to me was the use of different types of shots to convey different things. One of my personal favorite shots was the one where Leland is approaching Kane as he sits at the typewriter finishing Leland’s review. This shot has great depth of field as everything in the scene is in view and we can see Leland approach Charles from a long corridor shrouded in shadow, whilst in the scene Charles sits large at said typewriter and Leland is only about the size of Charles’ head approaching from behind. This gave me a feeling that Charles was way more important and superior to Leland and Leland himself was under the rule and influence of Charles.

Lastly I’d say my favorite part of this film is the acting. Orson Welles is so convincing as Kane most likely because this film resembles somewhat that of Welles own life and popularity. There is a scene in particular that really stood out to me which is the one in which Charles pleads with Susan to stay with him after he slaps her previously in the movie. He pleads with her to stay in this room that utilizes these low ceilings that gave me a sense of dread and consumption regarding Charles’ miscellaneous failures in his career. It was almost as if the room was closing in on him in this scene. Susan eventually ends up saying, “Goodbye Charles.” and walks out of his life forever. After she leaves he is beside himself and resorts to destroying everything within walking distance residing in the room. I could feel his anguish in this scene as he’s knocking over lamps and flipping table because Orson Welles, as an actor, made it so moving and convincing because he actually does all these things with so much emotion and conviction.

This film definitely gave me the message that money cannot buy happiness and the little things in life are really what matter. Love is always so far away from his aspirations in the film but at the end of the movie we realize that’s all he ever wanted along with the happiness he felt as a young boy with his mother.

  5. ROSEBUD!!! Loved the screen writing / story and how things all played out, specifically so with the ongoing ‘Rosebud’ riddle: Act 1 we’re familiarizing ourselves with our character, his wealth and the world around him, as well as some insight on his lifelong childhood abandonment issues and constant need to ‘be loved’. Act 2, of course the entirety of the movie, we bounce around from following a young Kane through the rising action of owning and operating his own newspaper and getting married, to the falling actions of his trials and tribulations, politics, love life drama… and, of course, more importance pointing to the significance of ‘Rosebud’. Act 3, it seems Kane’s world came crashing down around him and in his absence we see the final ‘Rosebud’ puzzle pieces being put together, yet remaining unsolved until the exact moment when we see ‘Rosebud’.
“Mr. Kane was a man who got everything he wanted, and then lost it…”

Camerawork was very intense and dramatic, utilizing upward angles, close up shots and deep focus to show how ‘large’ or powerful Kane seemed to feel in life at certain moments – and yet maybe even confined or trapped in other scenes where the upward angle is such that we can see the ceiling, creating a caged / boxed-in feeling of no escape… In some other scenes Kane’s helplessness is portrayed on screen by him seeming small on screen, yet in a large setting, or by him as just a boy playing in the snow alone in the background, as the camera slowly zooms out and through the window retreating to his parent’s discussing his fate, and future without them.

The lighting (while paired with the camerawork )helped hammer home the ‘feel’ of serious emotion and passion. Whether it be the scene where his mistress(?) meets his wife while Charlie stands in the background, smaller and in the dark resembling his helplessness to do anything other than watch Jim Gettys yank the rug right out from under his feet – or the scene where Charlie sits in the audience in the dark, only his face is lit to reveal his expression and interest. After Susan’s performance Charlie continues a standing ovation until he is the last man standing in the dark clapping. Even in the early scene of his parents choosing his future for him, Charlie plays outside, cheerfully, happily, well lit in a bright white surrounding of snow representing his childhood innocence which then zooms out through the window to a darker, more dramatic scene, with less lighting inside the house where his parents discuss the seriousness his fate.

It seemed to me that the Theme of the movie was that it is a (Romantic/drama?) Drama with emphasis from it’s underlying message hinting that money can’t buy everything / money can’t buy happiness, and even the richest and wealthiest of men may also be the loneliest…

  6. Citizen Kane Review
The film Citizen Kane is widely considered to be one of the greatest films in American Cinema, if not the world. While some of this hype has to do with the troubled history the film had with William Randolph Hearst, a look at the film shows that there is enough for it to stand on it’s own two feet. The cinematography, the use of lighting and the set design all come together to bring to life the life and death of new mogul Charles Foster Kane.
First, we will look at the set design. When this film was made, director and actor Orson Welles chose to use natural lighting as often as possible, and combined this with the set designs. The sets of Xanadu, Kane’s home, and the library of Kane’s former mentor, Mr. Thatcher. Both are vast, monolithic structures with clean walls formed of stone and steel, and their gargantuan size makes them as cold and empty as the men who built them. Humans seemed to be mere toys when wandering through them, and even in the final scenes, where all of Kane’s personal belongings are lain out to be categorized, the room still manages to feel empty even as the camera pan shows us a sea of possessions. They give us a great insight into Kane and Thatcher; bother were great, imposing men who nonetheless lived empty, lonely lives.
The second strongpoint of the film is the use of lighting. For the most part the lighting that is used is what one would expect to find in that particular scene. For example the scenes with a younger, more idealistic Kane have him fully in the light, often appearing in brightly lit rooms or outside. When we compare this with the shots of the older, far more cynical Kane, whose face is often obscured by shadows and darkness, we realize just how far Kane has fallen from the Populist Angel to the Fascistic Devil. Another important scene that uses lighting is the end of Susan Kane’s recollection of her failed marriage to Charles Kane. When we see her near the beginning of the film, she is sobbing alone in a darkened restaurant. Yet when we last see her, having told the reporter of how she divorced Kane after his attempts to control her life, she is seen sitting in a ray of light and seems more optimistic of her future. The lighting helps convey her relief of finally being free from her tumultuous past, and though she works in a somewhat run-down café, she seems to be happier now than she was as the wife of Charles Foster Kane.
Finally, we look at the cinematography. Rather than treat the movie as though it was a theatre production that someone happened to be pointing a film camera at, as had been the case with most films up until Kane, Orson Welles and the film crew eschewed monologues and static sets for a more fluid, realistic piece. People often talk over each other in the film, cutting others off or shouting down one another. Much of the backstory is supplemented by spinning newspaper headlines, radio announcements and newsreels. Low angle shots make figures such as Kane or Thatcher out to be giants, as befitting their status. The use of deep-focus-lenses shows everything in the shot as sharp and clearly as possible. These now-commonly used camera techniques were groundbreaking in 1941, and still hold up nearly seventy years later.

Citizen Kane was one of the greatest films that I ever watched. In fact, a lot of people say this movie is one of the greatest of all time. I really liked the lighting because it was bright enough to show the tensity on some of the scenes and focuses on some of the other characters besides Kane. Also, during the scene where the characters were in a dark room, the lighting actually focuses on nothing but a table. In addition, It seems to give it a mystery and suspense type kind of scene where something bad is going to happen.

The camerawork was well done. It was nice and clear showing the scenes where the movie takes place in a office or the snow scene where Kane was still a child. It made me realized how important those scenes were throughout the whole movie because they were part of Kane’s life. Also, the part where the camera was focusing on the window of a building where it’s raining outside and then shows Susan drinking gave me a sense of feeling of what she is going through.

Lastly, I really like the editing. Throughout the movie, it shows flashbacks on some of the characters telling Thompson the story of how they were associated with Kane. This shows how important not only Kane, but some of the other characters were. Furthermore, it even shows a fade in and fade out shot right before the flashback starts. It gave me a feeling that I was going back to a different timeline where I was going to learn about the character’s background whether it’s Bernstein or Leland.

I found the film Citizen Kane to be an Intriguing movie, especially for the film’s time because of the unique, or even unusual style on how the movie was filmed. I also found it interesting that Orson Welles both directed, and played as Charles Kane. The cinematography in the film was the first to catch my eye, because of the way the camera was angled. For example during the scenes inside the New York Inquirer building the camera was angled at an upward position towards the ceiling. This choice of angling that has the audience looking up at Mr. Kane, creates a sense that we’re beneath Mr. Kane, and emphasizes on how powerful and imposing Mr. Kane is as a character. The lighting also plays a big role on how the audience perceives Mr. Welles’s character. In the scene where Mr. Gettys accuses Mr. Kane of having an affair with Susan Alexander, Mr. Kane stands towards the back with his face fully shadowed, as opposed to the other characters who has their faces fully lightened up during this scene. Seeing Mr. Kane’s face darkened conveys a feeling that there is a darker, or even sinister side to Mr. Kane, and this shadowing on Kane’s face is used often in other scenes throughout the film. What I found to be the most interesting thing about the film was the composition in the shots. For example, when Mr. Kane explains to Jedediah Leland that hes fired, they have Mr. Kane in the foreground, Mr. Leland in the middle ground, and Mr. Bernstein in the background. These type of shots creates tension because sense Mr. Kane appears much larger in the scene compared to Mr. Leland & Bernstein, this foreground shot displays how Mr. Kane has more power over the other two characters, and obtains better control over the situation. Mr. Leland fights a loosing argument, as Mr. Bernstein stands in the background watching helplessly. Again Citizen Kane has a different style of filming for it’s time, but is remembered as one the greatest american films. Quite a fun film to analyze.

  9. Citizen Kane Review
This film had the world on it’s toes of how different and wonderful this film has caught many peoples attention over the years. I do love the feel of the movie and how creative the film makers and the actors and actresses made it to be. I have to say it does have its own unique feel to it.

Screenwriting: What this movie is mainly about is a group of reporters trying to decipher the last word ever spoken by Charles Foster Kane the millionaire newspaper tycoon: “Rosebud.” The film begins with a news reel detailing Kane’s life for the masses, and then from there, we are shown flashbacks from Kane’s life. As the reporters investigate further, the viewers see a display of a fascinating man’s rise to fame, and how he eventually fell off the top of the world.

Camerawork: The camerawork was pretty powerful in my own opinion. How the film makers choice the higher and lower angles to describe how the characters felt or what they were going through without them saying a word. One of the scenes that I thought was interesting was when Charles was listening to Jedediah about him wanting to go to Chicago so he could write for dramatic criticism for Charles paper. In this scene the camera is at a lower angle. Charles is sorta treating Jedediah like a child because he’s drunk and hen toasts with him for loving at his own terms. Which in the scene is true. Charles does things to get what he wants and if you don’t benefit his needs and wants then he will cut you off without a second thought.

Lighting: Lighting scenes in this film was amazing! I have to say; even though the movie had no color, it did show you a lot of lighting that you probably didn’t even notice. In the scene where Mr. Kane decides that “it’ll be fun to run a newspaper” and next makes a promise to the readers of New York Daily Inquirer. That scene showed me that he wasn’t up to no good because of the shading of his face and partly of his body. It felt as if he was going to give promises that he can’t “afford” to keep to his readers. Gave me chills and wondered what he was planning next.

  10. The cinematography had caught my attention after Mr. Smith-Rousey brought out a few pointers concerning how certain shots were set a certain way. It might have been obvious for most, but I’m now aware of some of the implied messages and insinuations. An example could be taken from the scene where Susan had become sick from her attempted suicide with poison, the bottle appearing larger than her, signifying it was not something she could handle. A characters current psyche or intentions could be determined by the lighting, or their apparent size compared to others or a location. Take for example Kane’s face being shadowed in a lit room. This implies his intentions are obscure. I find this really interesting, how the psychology of characters can be portrayed.
Speaking of how the characters can be portrayed, The depiction of Charles Kane seemed to have developed throughout the movie, but not with a happy resolution. We start out with Kane being taken from his home, to live a better live. Innocent, as a child should be. Fast-forwarding into adulthood, we can observe he is a charismatic individual, where most everyone loves him. Not only is he likable, he is also extremely wealthy. Later on in the film we realize he’s not so much of a great person as we might have originally thought. He is a selfish man with no love or true concern for others, expecting people to love him. Kane grows old and alone, and dies. His last words, “Rosebud”, could imply reminiscence of his childhood (Rosebud is the name of the sleigh he had taken with him as a child). In short it seems to me like he was thinking “How did it come to this?”
When it comes to screenwriting, Kane’s story had not resolved very happily, his life gradually went downhill because of his selfishness and lack of empathy. As his story unravels, we can see people walking out of his life, as did his ex-wives. We can see his love for material possessions envelop him, in exchange for a lonesome life. Kane forcing Susan to continue singing to avoid damaging his pride was only stopped when she attempted suicide. Kane finally dies of old age, alone. I like how in this film the protagonist is not typically portrayed as the “good guy”, that it doesn’t end with a happy resolution. As nihilist as this sounds, what I mean by this is it has a realistic touch as in not everything ends happily. Within the world of Citizen Kane is a story of how these sorts of events do happen in real life (pride, greed, divorce). It’s lonely at the top.

Through the movie I enjoyed the way the entire story was presented in the dialogue between the characters as the entire background of Kane was told by many of the different characters shown in the movie as flashback to moments in interaction with Kane. In a way it provided sometimes a contradictory, non-sequential, and enigmatic portrait. A particular comment I thought to be nicely included foreshadowing in the dialogue was “before he’s through she’s going to be the president’s wife.” It was noted when Kane presented his engaged to Susan, who was the presidents niece. The dialogue was foreshadowing of what was to come of the elections when Kane ran for president that was not necessary to include but fit in perfectly to me as the audience.
The arrangement was as expected to be a lot more effective to notice with each event. The first noted scene that had a strong meaning behind the surroundings was at the dining room with Kane and Susan. In each change one can notice how things become less lively when the flowers shown in the first scene begins to become less then it is switched to silverware. It also brings about a change in their expression, how they dress and the tone of their conversations. Just as their relationship the mood becomes changed into something darker as they both become more blunt and harsh with each other. Leading to the last scene where Susan is even reading a newspaper published by the competition.
Now moving on to the acting my focus was drawn more toward Kane himself. I found that within many if not most shots he was given a sort of melancholy tone to his entire character that set up his entire mood to be seen as darker and rather wicked. With the way Kane portrayed his character in attitude and expression was in pair with the already set up dark tone. I had found it puzzling for a moment when in one shot Kane was set as the only one in the shadow while the other characters were in the light but once it was further told through dialogue of his intentions of the situation it was clearer that he was not intending to do something right. As he grew to be surrounded by many people he had this way of being that focused on his level of importance that I found it suitable when a shot shown where some characters looked rather small than others and one significantly more larger in frame that showed through the shot of who’s important.

  12. In the movie Citizen Kane my first thought would be the use of light they use in the movie is excellent. The way they use the shadowing of faces to portray evil or being shaddy is very good.the story was well written. Also for this to be his first movie stared In and nail the part of Kane is tremendous. For this to be the film to use deep focus and really that makes the movies. Another thing would be how he makes certain items bigger to emphasize the meaning like the medicinem showing it was bigger than her in a sense. I like the character development it shows kanem not caring about money and actually wanting to make a differnce but as the movie goes you see he never really makes a difference for the not wealthy people.

  13. 1) Lighting. The lighting in the film, such as the room being dark while the table or another object was lit with sunlight, created a sense of suspense and mystery as it was not always immediately understood why certain objects were being highlighted by the director.

    2) Camera. The director made Kane seem both larger than life and insignificant and powerless with the use of close-ups and long shots including having the camera angled below Kane as if the view was intended to be looking up at Kane.

    3) Character Development. Kane seemed to be an overconfident self-centered person many times in the film while bouncing back and forth also displaying a “for the people” attitude that seemed selfless and giving. In the end, it was all done to receive love from others although he didn’t seem capable of loving others in return.

  14. This movie was nothing like the movies shown today. I am not very familiar with old, black and white movies, so this was a nice change of pace. First off, the history behind the cinematography of this film really intrigued me. I liked how the scenes and shots in this film revolutionized film making. First off, it was really interesting to learn that this movie was one of the first movies that used the full focus shot. Full focus shot in the beginning of the movie showed Kane’s innocence and childhood and how it was lost through his success and fame. Second, the ceilings were a different aspect that kept me curious throughout the movie. Having the ceilings be shown in the director’s shot kept me thinking that it was some sort of limit or “ceiling” to Kane’s happiness and success. Kane had a lot of power and money, but there was still something holding me back. The acting in this movie also intrigued me. I was a lot different from the acting in today’s movies. The characters I noticed tend to talk a lot faster than they do now. Most of my movie knowledge only goes back to at most thirty years ago, so seeing how people talked back then was really cool to learn. I also observed the way the actors exaggerated a lot more and differently in their reactions. They would often talk even faster and move in very awkward ways. For example the scene where Kane was going off in his bedroom after his wife leaves him. He swung his arms in a way where he couldn’t stretch them out as much. His arms were more stuck to his sides than you would normally see people do in that situation. The music in the movie was very different as well. Normally there would be consistent low volume background music in every scene in today’s movies, but I have noticed that in most scenes with character dialogue, the audio would only be of their conversations. Most of the music I distinguished was coming from transitions.

  15. Citizen Kane is the movie that that was different from the films back in 1941. It was one of the first of it’s kinds, filmed and shot in such a strange way, it broke new ground by introducing styles and elements that are still used today. Starting with it’s cinematography, Citizen Kane revloutionized film-making with the use of “Deep Focus”. To put it simply, Deep Focus is the technique where everything within the frame is in focus; the background, the characters, all in focus. Deep Focus is most important in scenes where Charles Foster Kane is losing control, or when he’s is becoming isolated. This really allows for a viewer to understand the exact magnitude of the scene, showing Kane’s control of a sitituation or lack thereof.

A great example of Deep Focus is in the scene where Kane is typing up Leland’s negative review of the Opera. In this scene, you can clearly see that Kane holds power over Leland, he’s typing up his review, he fires him. Kane is completely in control.

The story of Citizen Kane and the way that it is presented to the audience is another strong suit of the movie. The story itself is nearly a biopic, Citizen Kane presents a long peroid of time in a realist manner, allowing us to see the characters grow age and grow old. However, with this story, the story is not presented chronologically. Instead the story unfolds with segments that overlap, each new sequence adding more information along with the narrator’s story. This allows for the movie to be nearly made up with Flashbacks. Although Flashbacks weren’t anything new to Hollywood movies, Citizen Kane’s use of flashbacks adds even more to the story when given by the aging narrators. Since the narrators are all being interviewed about their expereince with Kane, they all must recall some distant memories, memories which may not be entirely true. Since as a viewer, we can’t entirely trust what our narrators give us in flashbacks, it adds on to the sort of enigmatic character that Charles Foster Kane was built up to be, it leaves the mystery of the truth still shrouded underneath all the memories.

  16. Citizen Kane was spectacular movie. This movie definitely defined a whole new level of cinematography for its time. First I would like to mention how the film was directed. I love when a movie starts off with the main character dying in the first 15 minutes of the film. Especially because back when the movie was made that was pretty unheard of. Also how the whole movie was shot in flasbacks. Second, i wanted to mention how important lighting was in this movie. Ligthing played a huge role in showing power, authority and when something sketchey was happening. Lastly, i appreciate the small but significant things done in this movie that were not very noticeable unless you were paying attention. For example, about half way through the movie they show Charles and Emily eating breakfast happily together with flowers on the table. But as their relationship deteriorated Emily slowly moved across the table and the flowers disappear showing the distance that grew between them,

  17. Citizen Kane was quite an interesting movie, for being a past version of Donald Trump. (joke joke)

One aspect about this movie that made it so interesting was the editing style. While in just one scene, we can tell how young, innocent, and naive Kane’s singer wife is, and how old, lost, and not-so-innocent looking Kane himself looks. While in another scene, which breaks away from the norm of looking up making the character as big as life, instead makes Kane feel lost, small, and starting to lose it all.

The screenwriting is another aspect that makes it so interesting. The screenwriters could have written this movie in any way possible, could have taken a whole different approach than they did, but they didn’t. Writing it the way they did, helped draw the audience into the movie and to want to solve the mystery of Kane. It made us, the audience, want to know who this guy is, instead of doing a boring documentary type of thing.

A third aspect of this movie is the acting. Every single actor helped draw us into the character they were playing. They helped build each one up and make them so believable.

A major aspect of this film is the lighting. How the lighting was shot helped depict what was happening in the movie. This is one of the few films Ive watched that used lighting in so many different ways, such as the shadow work used on Kane in multiple shots. Another aspect I appreciated was the special shots. Such as when the scene was being shot as if we’re looking up at Kane. Or when the medicine bottle was shown bigger than susan. The way scenes were shot were very creative and in ways that are new to me. The way they made kane age i thought was done really well. It really looked as if they filmed over the years actually progressing that way. there is a huge difference in how he looks in the begging and in the end.

  19. The movie Citizen Kane was honestly really good. I liked how it began with news papers reporting that Kane was dead. It made it feel as if this was a really important time during the movie. The lighting in the movie was good, especially at some parts where some of the characters were more brighter and Kane was a bit more darker and gloomy giving him a more mysterious persona. Kane hiding in the shadows made us all feel that he was up to something, we just didn’t know what it was even though his life would be all over the news papers. I liked how Thompson a reporter goes around questioning a bunch of people who knew who Kane really was. Wanting to know what the true meaning was of Rosebud. I liked how when Thompson went to question Susan for the first time it was raining and gloomy made the scene and setting feel as if this was not going to go well at all. Which it didn’t since Susan was drunk and wouldn’t speak. When Kane is caught having an affair with Susan by his first wife Emily, you could feel the animosity and the betrayal. Especially when Emily tells Kane if he was coming with her back home and he responded with “no I’m staying here”. The one scene that made it feel really dramatic was the part where Kane smacks Susan. Susan’s face expression gave it all away, showing how shocked and hurt she was to be hit by the man she calls her husband. The dialogue of the movie was good, the one quote that got to me was when Kane is begging to Susan that “you can’t do this to me” as she proves him wrong and ends up leaving him which leads to Kane trashing her room and breaking everything. At the end we never understood what the true meaning of Rosebud was except when we see people cleaning up after Kane is deceased a carved sleigh with the words Rosebud.

    Blog Post – Citizen Kane

First of all, I have never seen Citizen Kane before. This is the first time, I am watching the movie, Citizen Kane. I thought the movie, Citizen Kane was good. It was not something super good, but it was not bad either. Overall, I liked the movie.

One of the things that I liked about Citizen Kane was the cinematography. The use of lightening in the movie was awesome. In the beginning of the movie, where Mr. Thompson was talking in the News Room with other people about Rosebud. I noticed that the room was very dark and Mr. Thompson was in the light’s shade. I thought that the use of lightening in that scene was great. It revealed to us or at least me that Mr. Thompson was a shady character, someone to be suspected. Maybe, Mr. Thompson was someone who represented the viewers, the people, or us, who wanted to know about Rosebud too.

Another thing, I liked about the movie was the screenwriting. I thought the screenwriting was great of the movie. I really liked the scenes where Mr. Kane was working for the newspaper (I forgot the name of the newspaper). In those scenes, I have noticed that the ceiling were low and they were seen easily. I thought that the short height of the ceilings meant Mr. Kane was stuck with newspaper. There is no way out for him. I felt that the low ceilings meant that Mr. Kane could not escape whether that was from the newspaper or something else in his life.

Lastly, though I felt that the screenwriting of the movie was great, however, I would have done some editing. The whole movie started on the basis of, to discover about what is Rosebud? While, at the end of the movie, there was still no clue about Rosebud. So, that is something I was not happy about. So if I had the chance to some editing to the movie, Citizen Kane. Then, I would have created a different ending. I would have had the discovery of Rosebud discovered because that was the goal of the movie.

  21. Citizen Kane had a lot of great aspects to it. First of all, the lighting chosen was excellent. For example, when Kane would be talking to other people, but his figure would be dark and mysterious, and his face would be hard to make out, but the focus was on his voice and the important words coming out of his mouth. Another great aspect of the film was the acting of course. For example, when Susan Kane had over dosed and she was crying and talking about how she didn’t want to sing anymore. We saw the effect that Charlie’s demands had on Susan and that was evident by the way her acting was portrayed in that specific scene. But with this scene we also saw the change in Charlie Kane’s authority, since he went from making Susan do what she was against, to giving in to her wants. Another interesting aspect of the film was the use of the short ceilings, they were confusing and hard to notice actually because that is something most people do not pick up on. As we discussed the ceilings in class, as I kept seeing them, every time I would think to myself, “Why are they like that? What is the purpose?”. It made me question the director’s choice for those ceilings. Overall, the movie was great, and unlike anything I had seen in a long time.

  22. The movie Citizen Kane did not really interest me. However, if i had to choose some aspects that made the movie good it would be the editing, cinematography, and sound.
The editing was good because of the certain lighting that was shown throughout the movie. When someone was doing something bad, or something bad was happening then the shot would appear darker, or when Kane was constantly shadowed while the other characters faces were brighter and clearer to see. When Kane was doing something shady is when his face seemed to be shadowed.
The cinematography caught my attention because of the certain shots used throughout the movie. For example choosing to have the camera look up at Kane rather than having it face down on him due to his actions and mistakes.
The sound in the movie also caught my attention. The music went well with the scenes, and specifically at the scene were Kane was talking to his wife, the music would speed up and the camera would change its angles and shots all making the scene more intense.

  23. Ive never heard of the movie Citizen Kane, therefore I did not know what to expect. After watching this film there was very unique aspects to it, but overall I was not a big fan. What caught my attention was the lighting used throughout the film. There was various scenes where they would film Kane but you could not se him it was very dark, I believe they did this in order to capture the words he was saying. In my opinion nothing other then the words coming out of his mouth meant more. The best part of the CInematography durimg this movie is when they would have the camera pointed up at Kane. This is a very unique shot as it signifies he is a leader, or such a role model. If it were looking down at him it would mean the opposite such as not a leader and more of a follower. For the most part, the acting, I liked how the characters would talk fast and made it seem like they were mad or had such great energy.

  25. I’ve seen the title “Citizen Kane” pop up on several websites before but have yet to see it until now. To be honest, i was kind of disappointed. The story is not my favorite but you can’t deny what it has done for films. I think what makes it great is how the film was made rather than the actual story. Back when this was made, all movies/shows were quite the same but the cinematography of Kane was much different. Everything strayed away from what the typical film did. Different Camera angles, dialogue, story, lighting, etc were all new back at this time. The acting was also well done. One scene i really like in particular is when Kane first meets Susan. When he is doing everything he can to make Susan laugh, their chemistry felt really believable. The lighting in the movie was also something never done before in a film. In a number of scenes, the light would be bright on some characters leaving Kane in a dark shadow which symbolized the true nature of the character. I’ve seen this technique before in the movie “Hard Candy”. In the “Carpe Omnious” the lighting casts a shadow the same way it does in Citizen Kane. Although this isn’t my favorite movie ever, i appreciate the impact it made on the film industry as a whole.

The music went well with the scenes, and specifically at the scene were Kane was talking to his wife, the music would speed up and the camera would change its angles and shots all making the scene more intense. At the end we never understood what the true meaning of Rosebud was except when we see people cleaning up after Kane is deceased a carved sleigh with the words Rosebud.

  27. Citizen Kane has been widely acclaimed as one of the best if not the best movie made in the history of cinema, Film focused on the life of Charles Foster Kane who was a fictional version of William Randolph Hearst and could be considered a vail biography of Hearst himself.

One aspect of the film I liked was the low angel shots. The one scene that came into mind was right after Kane lost the election for governor. Kane was talking to a drunk Jedediah Leland and he wanted to talk to Kane about going to Chicago. The shot was filmed at a low angel making Kane look bigger. Showing him overpowering Leland during their conversation. That was showing Kane was the alpha dog as he has been through out the entire movie.

Another aspect of the film I like was the parallelism that was used. Showing an early scene of a shot outside of a club in which Susan Alexander Kane in. It was a dark stormy night. When she did not want to talk to Thompson about Charlie Kane. At that point of the film she seemed to have been drinking all night, and really depressed as Thompson was trying to figure out what Charlie Kane meant by his final words of “Rosebud” Then later on the film showing the outside of the same ciub, this time it was in broad day light and sun was shining. Had a different approach to it as Susan Alexander Kane was more open about to talking about Charlie Kane.

Lastly I really thought it was a great idea that Orson Welles did not have Thompson’s face being shown. He never knew who Kane was and was thought to be not as important as Susan Alexander Kane, Jed Leland, and Mr. Bernstein was. Just knowing that Thompson was a reporter trying to figure out what Charlie Kane meant by “Rosebud” was enough for me through out the film. For me it seemed as if Thompson was to suppose to be in eyes of “us” the viewers of this film. Made it like we were investigating and finding out about Charlie Kane in our own eyes.

  28. The movie Citizen Kane is the most famous film in Hollywood with great scenes and memorable performance. This film takes us back in the 1940’s were a character like Kane who engendered in power struggles and blackmail, newspapers and also with the FBI. My favorite scene was the part when he was doing his speech it show power and strength in his action and it show that he was a man of his word. That scene stand out to because he was showing greatness. I also like how the shot in the movie when he was eating his dinner with his wife and how each time the table things started to change and his relationship with his wife also change overawe this movie his good to watch if you like old movies.

  29. Why is “Citizen Kane” one of the best film ever made? Well it’s because of the great cinematography, acting, screenwriting and many other techniques from the film that are used in today’s films. A great example of the cinematography used is the long takes in the films. I think especially in this film, long takes help give some sort of immersion to the audience. Keeping the viewers focus to the characters and setting of the scene instead of cutting and editing scenes together, adding confusion when overdone. Long takes also lets the viewer take a breather and focus on the background and plot of the film. A good example I found is the flashback sequence of Kane childhood. In this long take, you can see Kane father and mother talking in the living room with a banker and then the moving to the kitchen were you see Kane as a child playing outside, which was all done in one shot. I enjoyed this take, because there was no editing to another take of Kane playing outside or another take of the parents suddenly appearing in the kitchen but instead they chose to do it all in one take. This made it feel as if I was there watching the parents of a innocent boy giving him up. Having and hearing what a child does in the background and at the same time viewing his mother signing a document that will rip him of his birth parent was a excellent way of building character for Kane, as you can already feel for him in a emotional way. Also the acting of Orson Welles was amazing. The way he played Kane as a adult from young to old was a great choice. Using the same actor in my opinion instead of just hiring another actor to play old Kane is the better move. The old man outfit its not the most amazing thing but it was good enough. The facial expression of a person has a-lot more meaning then looks and to change that would be changing the character. Also Welles really nailed it, when he played the younger and older versions of Kane. From the scene were he is talking among his peers on starting his own Newspaper business, showing his youth and energy to the scene when he is old and just lost his second wife, bursting with rage and fury. He really brought out Kane expressions and character. This movie screenwriting felt like it was meant to be interpreted as a poem titled “Rosebud.” You hear the word “Rosebud” and it sticks throughout the movie and it has no 100% meaning. I believe it has multiple meaning and varies between the viewers. It can mean sadness, a sort of comfort or a tragedy in Kane past. I like the way they chose to leave it to the viewers to decide in the end. The word really pops in the end of the film were you see them burning Kane’s sled. To me it symbolizes Kane losing what he was looking for in the pile of things meant to replace the sled he thought he lost. The sled being his happiness. Would I consider this movie the best? No, but i can certainly see why the people during the time did. If I was born in that decade I sure would have considered this the best movie ever.

  30. Citizen Kane was a film I have yet to see. I had heard of it before, but never found the time to actually sit down and watch it. Knowing of its success and how it is praised as one of the best films to be ever created, I watched intently to see if it lives up to the hype. It did not disappoint. This film was excellent for many reasons, but I’m going to look into only 3 areas for the sake of this being a blog and not essay. I’ll start with the lighting. I’ve seen lighting to showcase dark and light actions before but this managed to get this message across without feeling so heavy handed. a couple seems come into mind as examples. The best one I can say is the night Kane is caught in his affair with the “singer”. His wife first asks him questions on whether or not the affair is true, and the camera pans to Kane, standing in the dark, unresponsive. the light helps show off his bad actions. Though when he manages to fess up and not back down from the man threatening him, he steps out of the shadows helping to suggest that Kane did the right thing. I also loved the lighting on Mr. Thompson, a reporter, throughout the present day story. Whenever it would show him, the lighting did not focus on him ever. I believe the lighting helped in creating him as a vessel that the audience can relate to as we ourselves are trying to figure out what “Rosebud” means. The second thing I have to praise is the music for the film. You didn’t hear it as loud as you would in action films, but the music was present. Composed by Bernard Herrmann, the music displays a great deal of range between whimsical and mysterious. Bernard Hermann uses brass and chimes to mix together and create the music for a lot of modern story of Mr. Thompson on the investigation and uses the woodwinds to help create any of the joyous music during Mr. Kane’s life whenever things went well. Though its funny how the music fits the era it was created. While the music helps created an atmosphere around each scene, you sometimes get so lost into the film that you forget the music is even there at all. Which just makes you wonder if It is good acting, or the music makes itself heard only when necessary. The last thing to talk about is the screenwriting. I like that the whole time, the story takes us on an investigation just trying to figure out what “rosebud” means. Looking back, is carefully hinted at through the actions Kane takes, though they are very discreet. Leading to us finding out at the very end, through an antic sled Kane kept since he was young. I felt this was a great way to reveal what “Rosebud” means compared to spelling it out to us, that most films tend to do.

  31. Citizen kane was an exceptional movie and still holds the test of time. The cinematography is definitely something to bear witness to. I bet watching this for the first time in 1945 must have been a mind warping experience for all audience gowers. The score delivered perfect tone `along with expert lighting and shot composition mad for a really memorable watch. Shadows were used a accent pieces on characters and were used to show the tone of a character without exposition. Overall Citizen Kane was a fabulous movie, smart use of lighting and expert shot composition makes this movie a rock solid classsic in the world of cinema. -See below for quiz scores-

  32. Citizen Kane use a significant amount of cinematography by using a technique of deep focus. By using deep focus in this film they had everything in the frame and the background as well. By using this technique hey also showcase overlapping actions and the physical environment in which a film takes place. In the scene where Kane lose control and his personal isolation because the audience gets to see a clear view of the space Kane commands as well as the space over which he has no power. They used unique camera angles as well.
This movie also have a creative storytelling as well. Citizen Kane portrays a long period of time realistically by allowing the audience to see the characters age as the story goes on. Kane’s story unfolds in an overlapping form that add more information as the narrator tells the story. By them using flashbacks of lanes life was another great approach. The movie did a great job in painting a picture of Charles Kane a complicated man who in the end leaves the audience with more question than answers.
The use of sound and reoccurring motifs in this movie was parallel to the action. They use bridges, sound effects and supporting scores to enhance. The echo effect was one of the very first sound that I notice in my opinion was used to support the wealth and massive structures in where the characters is at but also shows the emptiness in them. A scene I can remember is when Kane’s second wife Susan left him for good and the absence of music allows the moment to sink in both the audience and Kane. The soundtrack focus around the idea that the music parallels the scene.

  33. Citizen Kane is a movie that definitely withstands the test of time. This film definitely didn’t make me feel like I’m watching an old movie. The complexity of the screen writing, mise en scene, and cinematography are what stood out to me most. I can just imagine how unbelievable it was seeing this movie when it first came out. I still see a lot of cinematography and screenwriting influence from Citizen Kane that apply to movies in my time.

The cinematography, alone, was a very powerful tool to establish the characters and mood of the film. It managed to add to the actual plot of the film, and each scene had a very specific way in portraying the mood through the lens. The cinematography made it clear to me what was important in the shot and established hierarchy through depth and placement of objects and characters.

However, the cinematography wouldn’t have been anything if it weren’t for the mise en scene in this film. The sets in this film were grand, and really made it a spectacle. Kanes mansion in particular was great, and really reflected the emptiness of Kanes character. I respect this much more, because everything in this movie was practical and hand made. Citizen Kane did a great job in making its movie in a believable setting.

Finally, this move kept me intrigued with its complex plot through screen writing. This movie uses flashbacks to help build Kanes character. This revealed little by little more about Kane and the whole mystery behind “rosebud”. Despite its age, I never found myself saying “when is this going to be over?” The plot had a great build up, and a satisfying conclusion.

Citizen Kane the greatest movie ever gets a nice 6/10 from me because I don’t like black and white movies and for lack of better words it isn’t my cup of tea; now aside from my personal flavors of cinematic enjoyment I will say this movie pioneered a lot of what we see in movie culture today, the shaky camera being one of them. I recall seeing that tactic used in many films/television programs now. Which to me is interesting since we see that in action films a lot (Brick mansions, Mad Max, Cloverfield…which was terrible by the way) and not so much in a drama based movie. Another thing I found interesting was how the montages were used in the film. When Kane was basically forcing his wife to sing opera and go on that tour a light bulb showed face near the end of the montage which let us know that the marriage between them was dying out like the bulb did itself or at dinner when we saw the flowers on the table die out to show the ending of a relationship. Orson Welles portrayed his characters in a very shady manner with the lighting he used to shoot it. Everybody seemed to have darkness about them whenever something down right gritty was going on. The circle of guys in the beginning of the movie puffing cigars and from what it sounded like tried to exploit Kane for what he was worth or how it was reversed when we spoke with Susan, his ex-wife, and how she had a spotlight placed on her to show us she was the only glimmer of true happiness in Kane’s life. I can understand why this movie is regarded so highly mostly because it was the first to do so many things with the camera and the way the movie itself was shot, the whole idea of there would be no new school without the old school thing seems fitting for this. Now I feel the message behind this movie was that money can’t always buy you happiness. Kane was a wealthy man with a thriving business, he traveled the world and was high on life taking advantage of the wealth he was blessed with but even so he never found happiness. Kane pushed his women away, was almost elected to office only to lose that because of a “sex scandal”. He thought he was invincible not realizing that his success brought down everyone around him not only physically but emotionally. Kane died alone in a house with a sign out front that read no trespassing. It makes me wonder why a man who has so much remain so private especially considering the fact he owned a NEWSPAPER! He shut everyone out pushed them away when he noticed that he could make neither them nor himself truly happy. A dark film with a dark message is what I got out of that but hey that’s just my opinion.

  35. Citizen Kane was a fantastic movie that had excellent use of cinematography in order to capture the mood and setting of each scene during the movie.
First off, the camera angles were excellent. The angle in which each scene was filmed captured the lighting and mood of each character very well. When the camera was looking up, it displayed the character as grandiose and superior, but then made them look inferior and weak when it was looking down on them. I thought that the scene in which Kane is having dinner with his wife over a long period of time was an excellent use of lighting and camera angles in order to accurately show how their relationship was deteriorating over time. Each step into the future, the shot got darker and darker as did their relationship. Another aspect of the film that I liked was the acting. For an older film, I didn’t find any of the acting to be very corny at all, it was all very believable and realistic; it is something that could still apply and be relatable to today’s times, making this film ahead of its time. Lastly, the sound in this film was great as well. The music that was used made good use of the scenes in which there was no dialogue. Also, the volume in which the characters spoke said a lot about their role in the movie. For example Kane’s voice in giving his speeches were extra loud and almost shouted, giving him the appearance of a powerful individual, while the voices of the women display their femininity and innocence.

    Cinematography

In the childhood home scene, the audience is introduced to a very young Charles Kane playing in the snow. This is the only time we witness the character set against an all white background (a practice usually used to establish a characters purity or innocence). The scene then shows young Charles, still playing in the snow, but this time he is seen decreasing in size as the camera focuses on his mother, father and Mr. Thatcher. This Deep Focus Shot is used to illustrate the loss of power that Charles Kane character is experiencing in that moment. Mr. Thatcher has come to take Charles away from his home, at the wishes of his mother but against those of his father. Charles does not care that he will inherit a substantial fortune by going with Mr. Thatcher, he is merely resentful that his cherished childhood is being robbed from him, very much against his will. This shot is also instrumental in showing the personal imprisonment experienced by Kane. Kane is the smallest person in the frame, commanding the least amount of power with presence.

    Lighting

Throughout the entire film, Lighting was an intricate and vital part of telling the story. Many scenes show heavy back lighting, and very limited key and fill lighting, causing a silhouette to form around the subjects on camera. For one scene in particular, the introduction of the reporter Jerry Thompson and the newsreel that decides to cover Charles Kane’s death, the entire room is bathed in heavy shadows, due to the high placed projectors generating the only light within the scene. Many of the characters are smoking cigarettes, which the light passing through the resulting clouds of smoke makes very clear the locations of the lighting sources. The emotional effect of using this technique for lighting was to create an ominous or foreboding presence within the scene.

    Set

Many of the scenes within this film show either a space of great enormity, or a room that is barely able to fit its contents properly. For the use of large rooms, many scenes use deep focus, an equal visual presentation of background, foreground and mid-ground in order to arrange importance or significance of the characters. Those subjects that are seen in the foreground appear larger and command the most power in a scene, where those in the mid and background descend in height and usually appear weaker or less important. In the scene where Charles Kane is signing his news paper away, his character is seen pacing back and forth between the mid and background. In the foreground, the characters of Mr. Bernstein, and Mr. Thatcher appear as giant heads on both the left and right sides of the screen. With Kane appearing very small between the two characters, the feeling generated is that some how Kane is in a compromised/ weakened position. However, as Kane moves closer to the foreground, his size as well as his presence becomes more significant. The scene where Charles Kane acquires his newspaper shows the audience the interior of a low ceiling building. The use of low-angle camera shots, along with the height of the ceiling gives the impression that the room is too small to contain such a dynamic presence such as Charles Kane, in all of his glory.

  37. I think the way Citizen Kane was edited works very well. The choice to give glimpses of the story a few different times, in different ways, before jumping into the whole story and filling in all the details, enhances the film entirely. The viewer first learns that Kane is dead. Then “News on the March” gives the initial overview of Kane’s life. It informs the audience of what kind of fortune Kane left behind and where his empire originated, in an old “ramshackle building”. After Kane’s legacy and fortune is established to the viewer, more detail and information from earlier on in Kane’s life is presented. Reporter Thompson’s time in the Thatcher library reveals earlier information and more detail, like when Kane’s mother inherits the fortune and sends Kane off with Thatcher. This presentation of the story from several angles helps establish Kane’s character and suggests how impactful his legacy was, based on how many ways it’s documented.

The camerawork in the film is unique, even today, and I imagine it was extremely innovative for its time. And example of this, like we talked about in class, is the low angle shot we see after the word of Kane’s mistress gets out. The angle makes the ceiling appear extremely close to Charles, as if the world is closing in on him, while he wanders through the inquirer building. Also the depth of field shots are very significant. In one of these shots, we see Thatcher with young Kane’s mom and dad inside, while Charles appears very small outside through the window. Everything in frame is in focus, and this depth of field suggest the scene is important.

The lighting in the film is intriguing as well. There is a scene where an entire dark room is broken up by bright light beaming through two windows. This mix of low key and high key lighting provides a very eerie feeling and sets the next scene up to be very intense.

Citizen Kane is one of the most esteemed movies to have ever been made for multiple different reasons. From it’s captivating cinematography, to the flawless screenwriting, to its meaningful undercurrent themes, this movie truly is phenomenal. It is regarded as a pioneer in cinematography for many reason which will be discussed in this blog post. The first reason is that it was the first movie to use the hand held shaky camera technique during the news broadcast in the first twenty minutes of the film when the garners are walking through the now deceased Kane’s mansion. The choice to make the camera unsteady enhances the feel that there was possibly a reporter hiding in the bushes trying to catch a glimpse of what this recluse had left after his death. Having the camera shake confirms that this is not a “planned out” shot but rather a documentary. Gregg Toland (director of cinematography) also popularized the deep focus camera composition for the first time. We see this deep focus composition when Kane’s mother is signing over the fortune to him when he turns of age. The scene starts with Kane playing out in the snow and he is big, the camera is then inside where the adults are talking about his future, as the camera back up Kane looks smaller and the adults look larger but because of the deep focus composition, Kane is still seen ( still focused) in the background playing in the snow. This type of shot allows each aspect to still be important but it shows that Kane is about to lose his childhood. His presence in the scene has not been diminished but we are able to clearly see how we are suppose to perceive the situation. We also see double exposure in this film as we follow Susan’s disastrously brief opera career. By overlaying her face singing with headlines we are able to get a sense of how bad she is without the filmmaker deviating the story to explain why she and Kane have issues. One of the most impactful cinematography choices in Citizen Kane is how the characters are shadowed throughout the movie. When the truth of his affair with Susan comes out and he his in her apartment being found out, he is completely in the shadows. When he writes the morals of the Inquirer, he is in the shadows. Both of these examples elude to the fact that Kane is in the wrong and it triggers the viewer to pay attention or understand that Kane is making a bad choice. The cinematography in this movie is truly breathtaking but the themes behind Citizen Kane are just as breathtaking. When Kane first meets Susan and goes back to her apartment we see the snow globe on her dresser that fell out of his hand when he died. This snow globe shows the innocence of Kane’s childhood that he lost at such an early age. Seeing this snow globe sitting behind Susan signifies that she is merely a temporary fix for the pain that Kane has endured by losing his innocent childhood so early.

  39. The lighting contrast on the movie Citizen Kane was a low contrast during the whole movie I did notice that when Charles Kane was speaking about something serious they would film his in a close up shot. In the beginning of the movies when the mentioned that he was dead it made me realize that it was more like a documentary about his like and how he became so rich. Rose Bud was his last word before he died was the main focus on the movie because not one person who knew him understood why it was mentioned. I also noticed that during the beginning of the movie the films lighting was a high contrast on the gray scale defining Kane’s joy. After his mother gave him up to the bank associate the lighting on the film became low of a contrast.

  40. Citizen Kane was an excellent film that was ground breaking in a lot of stylistic choices that were made on the production side of things. One of the things that I liked the most was the camera work. I loved the upward shots to make Kane seem larger than life and powerful. This helped to portray to the viewer how Kane was portrayed by those around him. Another thing that was groundbreaking was the shaky camera shots. Professor said that this movie was the first to ever do this in the movie, and for me it helped to make it seem like it was a live shot, or an actual news clip. Another thing that I really liked was the scenes that were shot with little to no light in the frame, this helped to show that the scene was very important/mysterious. Every time a dark shot appeared I played closer attention because I knew it was a scene of importance.
