    Reflections on “The Seventh Seal”
“The Seventh Seal” explores the crisis of faith one knight is having. The Knight is the most relatable charchter film, juxtaposed to his atheist squire and the foolish actor, whom is a firm believer in God. Both men are comfortable with themselves and their faith or lack there of, while the Knight wants to believe but is riddled with doubt. The Squire seems to view death as some sort of dark bitter joke. He believes that we all play chess with death the only question is how long and how well we play, “to play it well, to live, is to love and not hate the body or the mortal.” The Knight realizes this when he distracts Death in their final game of death to save the Actors, in one final act of kinds and love for his fellow man.

    Reflections on The Seventh Seal:

The film, The Seventh Seal was one of the film that I really enjoyed watching in this course. The film was directed by Ingmar Bergman in 1957 and it was set around the 1300s. The film became an artistic pursue because it pushed medieval historical event together to be in one movie. I think the reason why Ingmar Bergman director this film to be set during the 1300s because he wanted to portray philosophical ideals to the film where religion was important unlike his other movies that were set to be in the modern age. The film started off by showing a medieval knight who returns home after the crusades only to encounter Death waiting for him on the beach to play chess. The theme could be the silence of God because throughout the film there weren’t any signs that God was helping the group. The group only had to have hope that God is helping them. The scenes where the knight and Death were playing chess were important to the movie. This scene happened 3 times throughout the movie: beginning, middle, and end. I believe that the knight thought Death as a priest because the knight thought he was trying to help him see what’s the meaning of life and when he finds out that he was actually death it was to late to prevent anything. There was a lot of deep focus scene like the showing of the group and the Joan of arc to show the important of all characters in the shot. I highly recommend this film because it portrays philosophical and religious ideals in a medieval movie with a gathering of some historical medieval events into one movie.

    Reflections on The Seventh Seal:

Director Ingmar Bergman really does a great job in making sure this movie is a one of a kind. The Seventh Seal is a very distinguishable film, containing several features that make it unique. Although it is a bit peculiar and a bit strange, it will keep you engaged and will grab your attention with its distinctive components. One of the aspects that stood out from the film was the various scenes in which we see Antonius Block playing chess with none other than Death itself. This ongoing game of chess with Death illustrates a message that the filmmakers are trying to put across through these interesting scenes. These scenes show how people think they can escape from the hands of death. Life is seen as a game in which your opponent is death. It almost seems as if Death follows the Knight and everyone else, simply waiting for the right moment to strike. Another aspect that also stood out was the Editing in the movie. There were many deep focus shots that allowed the audience to perceive the feelings and emotions the characters were trying to portray. The other aspect that was interesting was that the film was very philosophical. It demonstrated how people can have doubts about their faith and beliefs. Overall, The Seventh Seal was a very unique film and I would definitely recommend it to others.

    Reflections on The Seventh Seal:

I felt that The Seventh Seal was a very complex and profound film, created with a lot of room for theological interpretation, just like a work of art. One thing I did notice was that in the scenes between the knight and death, although death always had a shadowed face he also was in the shot below the knight, and when they were playing chess the board was always tilted so that death sat slightly below the knight. That combined with how, no matter how desperately or aggressively he asked death for answers, death had no answers for the knight, showed me that despite a theme of an absence of God, that death was no God. There were several instances that implied that the God the characters looked to and referred to was all-knowing, specifically the visions of Jof and his ever steady faith in them. Another interesting decision from the directors was that death was not frightening, or sinister looking. He was a simple yet unattractive old man who moved at a slow pace. I thought that these choices on how to present death created a real divide between God and a “master of death.” I felt that these choices also manifested themselves in the ending scene when Jof tells Mia that he sees their old companions being led away by Death, and in the shadows they all appear slow and downtrodden, but Jof states that Death is making them dance.

  5. Reflections on Seventh Seal Movie: I thoroughly enjoyed the seventh seal movie because it talked about various controversial subjects like atheism, christianity, and the power of religion. The walking scene of death was very provocative because it showed all the people who refused to believe in God would suffer eternal damnation in hell. Entire cinematography, setting, acting, composition, sound, music, and plot development was wonderful. The knight stood true to his faith in god while the squire mocked the lord. Only the people in the covered wagon survived the ordeal of death’s plaque and rampage because of there faith in God and Jesus Christ lord almighty. God was saving the people who believed in them and Death made all the nonbelievers dance a slow painful death. There was a lot of middle ages scenery and costume design that showed the different social classes of the performers, aristocrats, knights, and poor peasant feudal farmers.

  6. Reflections on The Seventh Seal: Though made in the 1950s is set during the 1300s(I believe), this film’s well made and quite thought provoking. In the film, the theme centers around death and religion. We have the actors who believe, the knight who questions his beliefs, and the squire who really doesn’t care. You kind of see them go through each of the characters belief and basically you get the story from all perspectives. It kind of a slow film but it fits with the tone of the story.

I found the Seventh Seal incredibly well written and performed. I really enjoyed the movies study of faith. In the film those who lost their faith were the ones that died. I also really enjoyed how death played chess with a man and as the man lost more people died. The Seventh seal was an incredible movie with a well developed story and plot. I enjoyed the ending as well with the baby that was like a christ like figure.

    Reflections on The Seventh Seal:

I found the Seventh Seal movie to have an implicit meaning. At first the theme of this movie was not clear to me, but as I continued to watch I came to the realization of what I took the meaning of the movie to be. Death is out there for each of us and we can not avoid it. Some of us hold on close to faith, but for me the movie questioned what faith really was. Yes, we believe in faith and hold it close to our values but it cannot be seen or touched, only felt. Although I ended up having a different take on the film than my initial take one, I found this film to hold great meaning. I originally thought that the man who played chess with death had become ill with the Black Plague and was hallucinating and having visions about what his life meant. it almost seemed like a metaphysical approach to me, such that he was living life, but was he living a meaningful one. After, thinking about the film a bit, I came to believe that he was struggling to believe in God. I realized this when he was in the confession stand and expressed to death, that he wished that God would show himself to him if he was truly there. The movie took on a bit of a spiritual journey and I feel that the knight squabbled with what his faith was.

  8. Seventh Seal Reflection:
Seventh Seal was a real thought jerker for a film. I agree with it’s main message of how do you believe in something that never physically presents itself? It’s a very difficult subject that was tackled without any biased that I could see during the film. I really enjoyed the plot of a knight playing chess with death to save his life. That is a really interesting and overall great premise for a film that just makes you really want to know who will win and lose. All the other subplots were kind of watered down for me because I was thinking so much about the chess game the entire time. This movie also has really good one liners and quotes. My personal favorite line during the film is when Jon’s is playing chess with death and says “No one escapes you do they?” and death simply nods his head back and forth.

    Reflection on The Seventh Seal:
This was a film that took place hundreds of years before the actual time this film was made. This film depicts a knight named Antonius Block who returns to his hometown after the Crusades only to see the Black Death has hit the town. As he travels he ends meeting Death himself and playing him in a game of chess for his life which lasts throughout the entirety of the film. More characters are presented in the film such as Jof and Mia which are a traveling couple. This film has a lot of religion revolving it in which Antonious Block is searching for answers about God but cant find out anything even after asking Death himself for answers. Despite this the film seems to present that the people who believe in God without questioning live a better and more blessed life. This idea is represented as Mia and Jof are the only ones saved in the end because of their immense faith. I believe it was a good idea for the director to portray Death has someone who doesn’t have all the answers and has to work to get things done as well. The wagon was used as a safe haven in which no harm was done to anyone who was inside. Overall, this was a great film for its time and I recommend others see it.

  10. The Seventh Seal:
This movie, while being popular with critics, made little to no impression on me. I understand that the story is about a knight who returns home after the end of the crusades, along with several other characters the knight meets when he returns home. The knight begins to question his faith in religion when he meets the other characters throughout the film. I did catch how the others who lost their faith ended up dying, and that this was a way of saying that they were punished simply for questioning their own beliefs. This is what I really disagreed with the film. It basically said that you shouldn’t question the things around you and to just blindly follow what is said.

The Seventh Seal is a swedish film made in 1957, although the movie took place during the fourteenth century. I think this was such a well directed and performed film. I used this as one of my films for my essay, so I am going to remark on an aspect that didn’t make it into my paper. I found it interesting that for the amount of time that the knight, Antonius Block spends wanting to see God, he never actually spends much time investing in God. Other than the one scene where he is talking to Death, while thinking he is a priest, we never see him praying, reading the Bible, or fasting. These are actions that people who feel close to God do pretty often, maybe not the fasting, but definitely the praying and reading. I have to wonder if this was intentional. We know a major theme in the film was the silence of God, but I wonder if the director was also making a point. People say they want God in their life, but are not always willing to put in the time that having a relationship with someone takes…most Christians talk about having an actual relationship with God. It took me watching the film for a second time, to realize that Block had his moment to do one last final meaningful act. When he knocked the chess pieces over, I thought he was simply trying to cheat death or escape from it, but he was really giving the lovers and their child a chance to escape death. I think it was a poignant decision to allow the believers to escape death…in the grand scheme of the film, I wonder if this was God’s one act that was not silent.

    Film Review:

The 1957 Swedish film, The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman is a historical fiction film set in the 14th century revolves around a Knight returning to Sweden from fighting in the Crusades only to find his home country ravaged by the Black Plague all while he is questioning whether or not God even exists. The movie is considered by many as a classic in the world of film for it’s story and iconic visuals. While it may not be my taste, I really do appreciate it as a film. Many of the shots were very memorable and actually had some familiarity to them as most have been parodied as both a joke and homage to the Swedish film. I also thought it was very elaborate to establish “the game of life” through a game of chess between the knight and with the personification of Death itself, by the way that version of Death was very creepy, might have been just the contrast with his skin tone, the costume design and the set, but still it was pretty eerie. I also very much appreciated the references to the Book of Revelations, as out there as they were, they also remained very subtle and not in your face like many other films have when referencing the Christian faith. All in all, The Seventh Seal was interesting story wise but had very unique visuals and for that I would give it Seven Seals out of ten. That was a terrible joke.

    Reflections on the Seventh Seal:
Although the Seventh Seal made an impact when it came out as a movie that questioned religion and had non believer, I wished that the the group of people did not die because it just felt to me that it was still trying to push the idea if you do not believe in God you will be punished. I like the foreshadowing in the movie especially the one scene when the knight and the squire are watching as the Dancing with Death painting was being created and the squire draws himself in the painting and at the end that is how the juggler sees the squire when he is dying. One of the main focus of the movie was the knight’s struggle of believing in God or not and although he did not get that resolution, he got another one which I feel is the most important and was doing him wanting to do “one meaningful deed” which was saving the family from death. And I think if anything people should take from this movie is not weather you should believe in god or not but to be a good person.

  14. Film: this film was interesting and maybe I wouldn’t be ok without watching it again. I would have wanted to know more about the plague and how it originated and how people stared believing in it and how for some reason you would die if you got it. Also it would have been cool if we would have actually seen how the knight made a pact with death and how they decided to play a game maybe the movie did say all this but I didn’t quite get it. Any ways I liked the part where the knight is playing chest with the dark spirt and the people are in a far distance like if he was playing and deciding the destiny of there people’s lives by a move of a game. The vision the juggler had also helped us actually believe him towards the end and not think we was a crazy circus man. In this film we saw a lot a different shot and camera angles which helped the film. For it being filmed in 35 days it was a good outcome.

    Reflections on The Seventh Seal:
the theme of death that ran through the film was an interesting way to show not only what is waiting for all of us, but how religion plays a role in how we handle death. the symbolism in the film of the ches match with death and the storm at the end also played heavily into the the theme of death, we make choices in our lives and these choices lead us to our end eventually. Ingmar Bergman was very artistic in displaying these ideas in the film. I only got to watch the 2nd half of the film, but found it very interesting.

    Reflection on The Seventh Seal:

The Seventh Seal was kind of a bummer. I was rooting for the knight throughout, as he was who the film opened up with, and him struggling with his faith made me want a good ending for him. The film explored death and faith, and it definitely solidified that it is only those with unshakable faith that are spared. This film was compared to Shrek as its predecessor because of how it threw together many recognizable elements of the medieval times into one time span, even though historically they would not have occurred simultaneously.

Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal challenges its viewers existentially. The film, taking place in strange mix of the crusades and the bubonic plague, revolves around religion. The knight, the focus of the film, is not a shining example of good or evil, but instead is a wanderer, looking for reason in a world without any. Those around him have, by way of said religion. They find their answers for their punishment by the plague in scapegoats, in “witches”, and even attempt to gain God’s mercy by whipping themselves. However, ironically and quite on purpose, no god is portrayed in this cruel reality. Only death. Surprising about this film is its representation of death and how people interact with this entity. The character of death in The Seventh Seal, instead of the usual skeleton or demon with a scythe, was represented by a simple old man, in simple black robes. Undefeatable, nigh intangible, and inevitable in his practices, he follows the knight to his end.

The Seventh Seal Reflections- This film combined several different stories from history- Joan of Arc, and The Black Plague as well as others. All the stories that were touched on didn’t happen during the same time. I think that Ingmar Bergman wanted to make a point, about religion and death. I noticed he did that by having two themes that I caught were the ideas of God, or lack thereof and the idea of death and trying to cheat it. Through the film many people were questioning God and religion. Bergman made a very interesting film by showing several different storylines all intertwining but with similar themes.

The seventh seal had a lot of internal conflict in which the main character had both beliefs of life after death; in turn there were a lot of literal conflicts with death through out from the cutting down of the tree to the chess match in which deaths pieces were black. I think this scene in particular with the chess board was more so the internalized battle within the character consious given there wasnt a deep focus shot like other points in the film.

    The Seventh Seal

I thoroughly enjoyed the seventh seal movie because it talked about the power of religion. Also, I found the seventh seal well written and performed. In the film those who lost their faith were the ones that died. I also enjoyed how death played chess with the man and the more the man lost more people died. The Seventh seal was an incredible movie with a well-developed story and plot. Overall this was a great movie.
